Buzzy’s and GlobeHopper up for Best Coffeehouse in Richmond
02/02/2011 12:18 PM by John M
richmond.com is running a poll on the best coffeehouse in Richmond and local favorites Globehopper and Captain Buzzy’s are both in the running. Cast your vote!
Buzzy’s is my living room.
We are really lucky to have two great coffeehouses in our neighborhood. Kudos to both for delivering superb coffee with fantastic customer service.
I guess just being a coffeehouse in the area is enough to get a place like GlobeHopper a nod. I never experienced anything but tepid resignation in response to my presence there; hardly good service. And they’re never open.
Now Buzzy’s… those guys deserve it.
Luke, you must be high! I love GlobeHopper more than any other coffee shop in Richmond. I’ve always had great service and the french pressed Counter Culture is the best coffee in town. Plus that little space out back totally has a French Quarter vibe.
Capt Buzzys is in the running only because they happen to serve coffee. Burnt coffee, coupled with stale food served by counterpeople who seem to want to be elsewhere.
I agree with #5. We used to exclusively buy coffee from Buzzy’s, but inconsistent quality and availability of the blends we liked have led us to switch entirely to Blanchard’s (with an added bonus that the roasts are just plain better). GlobeHopper’s french-press and espresso drinks have always been top-notch, however.
Why are Globehopper’s drinks like “sample size?”
Captain Buzzy’s- more like Captain Scuzzy’s. If you like to eat in a dirty dining room that’s the place for you.
I do go to Globehopper because I like their coffee and also because I can have a beer or wine if in the mood. I have noticed lately though it’s looking a little dirty too.
Clean up your act people.
I’m waiting for Starbucks to come to Churchhill, where the coffee is always good and the quality is consistent.
I’ve held a major grudge against Buzzy’s since they served my hot chocolate cold.
there’s a starbuck’s inside the market. we don’t need more of them.
i haven’t been to buzzy’s since i got a quad latte and the young guy working behind the counter seemed to forget to put any espresso in it at all.
i found this out when i’d already gotten on the highway to run errands.
In addition to the Market, there are also Starbucks at the Omni and at T. Miller’s. The Subway restaurants all sell Seattle’s Best Coffee, which is owned by Starbucks. Let the assimilation begin.
Keep Starbucks away, their coffee is horrible!
Captain Buzzy’s coffee is actually pretty good, I used to go there regularly to buy bean Kenyan coffee (I never went there for the food, it’s extremely mediocre, sorry!).
But I don’t go there anymore, mainly because it looks like a junked-out college lounge with the gross filthy couches, knicked up furniture that looks like it’s about to break, old newspapers everywhere, crumbs on tables, etc. Often there are tons of moms with huge strollers and wild kids who are bouncing off the walls from too many scones or whatever other sugar they scarfed down.
These issues are compounded by the fact that Buzzy’s has set up the flow of the space in such a way as to ensure that the ordering food + drinks/paying for food + drinks/actual preparation and getting of food and drinks is ergonomically retarded.
I was surprised to read that Clay Street stays away from Captain Buzzy’s because of “tons of moms with huge strollers and wild kids.” I once stopped at Captain Buzzy’s while out for a walk with my baby, and received nothing but scowls and eye rolls from the college-aged patrons stretched out on the couches. No one got up to assist me with the door, either. (Baby was asleep, not crying, by the way). I haven’t gone back in while walking my son because I felt so unwelcome. Maybe it depends on the time of day. I have found the Globehopper employees to be much friendlier.
I undertand all the hate on Buzzys, but you guys should really give it another shot. A few months ago i would have agreed with all of you but they have really stepped their game up. They now have an actual baker that knows what shes doing (no more hard cookies just out of the oven). The staff seems to care more now and it seems they actually know something about coffee. Now dont get me wrong, they still have room for improvement. Sometimes the coffee tastes like it was burnt in the roasting process. The bagels and egg Sandwiches are great but their lunch sandwiches just arent quality. However, this is a coffee shop and they dont have a dedicated cook so you cant go in there expecting a great meal, just something to fill you up.
I actually don’t hate Captain Buzzy’s. I haven’t had much of the food, but we enjoy the coffee and love the Captain Buzzy shakes and limeades. I just was surprised that one of the previous comments was sort of the opposite of my experience. I have found Globehopper to be more consistant with friendly service, but I am glad both locally owned places were nominated.
I want a Starbucks here in the Hill. As in walking distance. Go ahead bring on the hate. I could give a shit less. Buzzy’s blows. If you’re satisfied with inferior coffee and service than I guess you deserve that place.
alec #16, just how far away from 25th and Main are you?! It seems pretty walkable to me to go the Starbucks there in the grocery store, although it is a climb back up the hill – are you just wanting a Starbucks on level streets with no hill to climb back up?! LOL
I want a starbucks to be a maximum of 4 blocks from me. I’m not walking all the way down to 25th and main.
Alec, I think you need to move to Seattle to get that ratio! Just kidding, but best of luck getting it!
i want a starbucks no more than 5 feet away from me, and no more than 1 block form the next starbucks.
Buzzy’s is all I need.
Someone else mentioned Buzzy’s smoothies- they are great! The only thing I’ve ever gotten there that I’ve really enjoyed. I too have been served room temperature hot chocolate before.
And what is up with those cakes? They are always strangely decorated and unappealing looking imo.
I had to vote for Shockoe Espresso. That place is terrific. Great food, great drinks and I like the layout way better.
I agree with Geneva, I’ve never seen an overwhelming presence of moms or children in Buzzy’s but have seen tons of students hanging out. Nothing against students, just stating what I generally see in Buzzy’s.
#22-Always the brightest of students.
Buzzy, BUZZY, BUZZY!!
