Any word on what happened to the power last night?
UPDATE
The Richmond Police Department is investigating the death of Kareem Shaquille Brown, 20, 3800 block of Tighe Court, Richmond. Brown was shot while driving a vehicle westbound on East Broad Street about 12:50 a.m. His vehicle crashed into two utility poles at the intersection of 17th and East Broad Streets. He died at the scene.
Two passengers in his vehicle were uninjured. They were questioned by detectives. One of the passengers was detained pending review of the case for possible charges by the Commonwealth Attorney’s Office. The department is withholding his name until that review is complete.
A weapon has been recovered.
According to the automated message at Virginia Power, it was caused by a car accident.
NBC12 just said something about a car hitting a pole at 17th/Broad last night. They didn’t mention anything about the power, but I’m guessing there might be a connection?
and Broad and 17th is still blocked off this morning

If I’m not mistaken, there was also an accident that knocked out power near Broad and 18th earlier last week.
We could here sirens like crazy all the way up at 27 and broad….right after power went out.
Ditto on the sirens. It seems that as soon as the power went out, there were flashing lights all over the place. Fire department SUVs, cops; the works. Do they fan out and do emergency patrols up here when the power goes out?!
Ha ha! Good point observer! I actually had the same thought last night. Yesterday I had to call the police At 4pm to report a man walking up to front doors and trying them out to see if they were unlocked! At least we all watch out for each other! :0)
It was a car accident. driver hit a utility pole and died.
@7 Where was this happening?

So one of the passengers in Brown’s car shot him while he was driving?
Does it seem to anyone else that we have been on a bad run of violence this year? I used to think winter as a break in the shooting war. This is one fact of city life I could do without.
@Clark – It does seem that way. I spend a lot of time in both the Fan and Church Hill and I’ve been avoiding being outside alone after dark. As you point out, cold weather doesn’t seem to be inhibiting violence as much as in past years.
I may be proven wrong, but it’s sounding like there was reckless mishandling of a firearm taking place in the vehicle. Which makes the whole situation even sadder because if that’s the case then someone is going to have to live with the fact that they killed a friend.
I drove up Broad this morning at 11 on my way to Church Hill. I hadn’t yet heard about the shooting. The police had a small, barely visible unmanned roadblock up exactly at the highway entrance with no warning, so there was no choice but to enter the 95/64 ramp. It was a total cluster. either some warning or putting the sawhorses a few feet further ahead so people could have made a U-turn to go west on Broad would have made a lot more sense.
@Observer:
Part of the reason you hear a lot of sirens after a power interruption/outage/whatever is that a lot of alarm systems don’t take kindly to it. Thunderstorms can cause the same thing.
Adding to the #7 post, there is a guy that walks around trying car doors in the early morning hours. Our neighbor was robbed a couple of weeks ago so I have been watching the neighborhood a bit more. I’ve seen this guy twice in the past 2 weeks between 6-7 a.m. at N 32nd and E Marshall.
Good call on the alarm systems, Jennifer! I wouldn’t have thought of that.
@Lucky Dog-Good on you for watching out for yourself and your neighbors. I’m surprised that someone is brazen enough to be trying car door handles at 6 or 7 when it’s (almost) daylight and people are beginning to get up/move about as they start their days!
Ashley & Lucky Dog,
How about a description of the guy testing front doors and cars? Height, thin, stocky, clothes worn, jeans, cap, hoodie, sweats, down jacket, color of the clothes, old, young guy?
@18
I agree,I am in that general area and would like to know as well.
The guy trying car doors – fairly tall – 6′ or better – middle age. Scruffy looking. When I’ve seen him, he’s had on a big down jacket with the hood up so it’s hard to tell facial details. He had dark pants on, probably jeans. He looks very down on his luck. The police were notified both times.
Just saw this on the RTD site: http://www2.timesdispatch.com/2011/feb/14/man-charged-shockoe-bottom-death-ar-842016/
Arrest in 17th & Broad Death Investigation
The person initially detained in the death of Kareem Shaquille Browne early Saturday morning in Shockoe Bottom is now charged in that investigation.
Daytron Lamarn Brown, 22, of the 4300 block of Chamberlayne Avenue is charged with murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.
The investigation is ongoing as to the circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting of Kareem Browne of the 3800 block of Tighe Court in Henrico County. Browne was the driver of a vehicle traveling west on East Broad around 12:50 a.m. Feb. 12. A shot was fired inside the vehicle, which then crashed into two utility poles at the intersection of 17th and Broad streets. Browne was pronounced dead at the scene.
Daytron Brown and another passenger in the vehicle were not injured. A weapon was recovered.
Richmond Police is coordinating efforts in this investigation with the Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office and the Medical Examiner’s Office. No further information will be released pending the outcome of the investigation.
I know a little off the main subject but, #20 Lucky Dog– I saw that dude on 26th and Grace a few months back. He wasn’t pulling door handles but he was walking along side the cars (not on the sidewalk). I didn’t think too much of this because a lot of people around here don’t bother to ever use a sidewalk.
Now that you mention this I will keep a better eye out.
This time it was a crime, next time it may be a storm, but if you don’t like totally relying on the grid for your power and you have the right solar exposure, you might want to consider a PV array with battery backup.
Even if you only able to solar power one circuit or two in your house, you can lower your energy bills and be more self-reliant.
