Market moving to offer van service
02/18/2011 6:15 AM by John M
A reader writes in with interesting news:
I heard from a friend who works at the Market at Tobacco Row that van service will soon be starting there. Today I confirmed this with the store director, Hugh Lewis. He said he didn’t want to give out specifics since details haven’t been finalized but…
there will be routes running from Mosby and the local retirement homes and they will be able to give rides home to people who walk or ride the bus to the store but have too many groceries to carry them home. The van is scheduled to arrive [Friday]. […] He also mentioned the idea for this came from the article on food deserts that appeared in the Richmond times a few months ago.
TAGGED: food desert
It would be much better news if one of the decent grocery stores in the area would bus their food over to the market…
Not a good sign for the chances of the market becoming more upscale/better quality – the biggest news from them in a while is that they are focusing on the carless population. Probably because this is the only population they can get to be loyal and expect to pay extra for less selection and out of date products.
Well Kudos to Hugh and his store. What a benefit this will be to many in our neighborhood who find access to a good grocery store a challenge!
If you can afford “upscale” then you probably have a car and can drive further to get it. But for those who have to walk to the grocery store and (more problematically) carry what they purchase back up the steep hill, a van will mean they can shop at the Market instead of one of the even more expensive and poorer qualitly corner groceries. The problem of food deserts is real for many of our neighbors.
This is nice to hear, although my patience runs too think to shop there regularly. Personally, I really wish the police would do something about the people that are always parked in the fire lane and those that use the handicapped spots without the proper tags.
Alex, for another grocery option, check out relay foods. They have over 30 stores, small markets & even farms associated with them. You order & pay online & they deliver to 24th & Broad every Wednesday. No delivery fee & they state prices are the same as retail. Sadly, many without cars won’t benefit because they often won’t have a computer/ Internet either. For those with a computer though it’s great access to healthy (or unhealthy, if you prefer!) food at a reasonable price.
Kristin, thanks for the tip. This is exactly what I’ve been looking for. Surprised I hadn’t heard of this before.
Kudos to the Market! Not only will van service be beneficial to those without a vehicle; but also beneficial to the environment– and, perhaps provide a healthy walk for the couch potato; something I imagine lots of us could use.
Peace, Light and Love,
