State Senate, House of Delegates and Circuit Court Clerk up for vote November 8
The next election in the City of Richmond will be a general election on Tuesday, November 8, 2011. The polls will be open from 6:00 AM to 7:00 PM. Items on the ballot will be State Senate, House of Delegates and Circuit Court Clerk.
Jennifer McClellan (D) is running unopposed for House of Delegates District 71. Delores McQuinn is running unopposed for House of Delegates District 70.
Former RVA mayor and State Senator since 1991 Henry Marsh (D-incumbent) is being challenged by Preston Brown (I) (president of WCLM Radio, P.T. Brown Auto Sales, The Heart & Soul of the City newspaper, and The Heart & Soul Sidewalk Cafe) for State Senate District 16.
Citywide, Bevill Dean (incumbent) is seeking a 3rd term as Circuit Court Clerk, with a challenge by Emmett J. Jafari. The Sept.29 issue of the Richmond Free Press has a piece differentiating the 2 candidates (emphasizing Dean’s experience). Previously a candidate for 8th district school board in 2000, sheriff in 2001, mayor in 2004 and sheriff in 2005, the tour bus operator Jafari has a video on Youtube for his current campaign:
Re. Circuit Court Clerk, don’t know and have never heard of Mr. Jafari, but I actually do know Mr. Dean and will most definitely vote for him. He’s been in office for years, has tons of experience, and knows what he’s doing, runs an efficient office (and unlike the sheriff’s office, doesn’t hire his family). Sounds to me like Jafari runs for any office that opens up, IMHO. I don’t think Dean needs to worry about keeping his office, but I encourage everyone to vote for him anyway.
I’m probably going to vote for Preston Brown, too. I’d like to see the Marsh Machine retire, frankly. I’ve said it before, Marsh was a force way back in the day, and I admire what he did back in the day, but I think it’s time he steps down and lets someone younger and more responsive have a chance. I have no clue if Preston Brown can do the job, but this won’t be the first time I’ve voted for someone who runs against Marsh (if I think they can do the job), and I think Brown could probably be effective. Style had a piece about him a few months ago, and it sounded to me like he could do the job. Again, just my opinion.
