Whatever happened to Shed Town?

A Church Hill North walking tour on October 15 from the folks at the Valentine Richmond History Center, Better Housing Coalition, and the Storefront for Community Design. 10/15/2011 10AM-noon $5. 1001 North 25th Street.
Is the disappearance of Shed Town the reason that the area around parts of George Mason Elementary School (especially headed towards 9-Mile) is full of newer houses? There seems to be a well defined area in the midst of an of historic architecture where a bunch of historic properties just vanished and all new homes were built.
Pay $5 and ask Mr. Herring at BHC. Most of those newer homes were built by Better Housing Coalition, using your tax dollars.
The area north/east of George Mason was rebuilt in the 70s&80s as part of an urban renewal project.
The bulk of Better Housing’s work has been just a little west of there, and since the late 90s.
That would be the infamous “Model City.” At one time there were remnants of Shed Town remaining along the fringes. One of particular note was an antebellum cottage built by a free black woman.
