Players robbed at Gillie’s Creek Disc Golf course
10/24/2011 6:45 AM by John M
Richmond police Capt. Paul Kiniry said neither man was injured in the robbery, which occurred at 1:38 p.m. when the two were approached by a pair of young men who engaged them in conversation before one pulled out a black handgun. The robbers took the wallet of one of the men before fleeing on foot.
the barrista of the woods dtrikes again
People get robbed down there a LOT. whether it gets reported or not. I’ve spent years down there on a mostly daily basis and i can say people get robbed at the track, at the horseshoes area, playing flag football, whatever. It’s a very dangerous area. The police used to send patrols around, but that doesnt really help because the cops are in cruisers just circling the main streets. If you want to catch kids out there throwing huge rocks at cars or robbing people, get off your ass and out of your patrol car.
I walk down there pretty much daily and never have a problem. Of course, I’m not digging around in the woods for frisbies and usually walk with a rottweilier. Just saying.
You mean have them WALK a beat?
Shocking idea.
Policing that area–perfect job for the mounted police squad.
Such a shame that people can’t even play frisbee without fear of getting robbed. I moved out of the area 10/1 and while I miss my neighbors I do not miss all the crime that was always happening in that area.
This is what happens when you raze an entire traditional, dense, mixed use, urban neighborhood. There are no more eyes on the street to keep a watchful eye on the activities in public spaces. I never got to experience it first hand, but I think the area would have been better off left as the old Futon neighborhood. While the old Fulton can never be replaced, I’d love to see them at least try to bring back some of its more traditional, mixed use elements. I’m sure there’s a way to even incorporate most of the existing park within such a development.
A guy who works for me had his car broken into down there a few weeks back and a laptop and cash stolen. That area is getting pretty dicey recently it seems.
One other thought – Gillie’s Creek would make a nice location for the Occupy Richmond crowd to claim… their message of taking from others who are more fortunate would go over well with at least a couple folks who are already using the park.
I’ve spent a fair amount of time down there, and never had a problem. Granted playing frisbee golf does make one an easy target.
Most of the dudes sleeping down there aren’t the problem. They aren’t going to rustle the brush they sleep on. These are the homeless that just want to be left alone.
It’s the barely adult who stole his daddy’s snub .22 and wants free money. The days are getting shorter it is a good time to reiterate looking after one another. Be it kickball, bicycle, grillin’, chillin’, rc car and frisbee folk alike. The police are spread thin these days. Be aware and be safe.
I have a HUGE dent on the top of my car from someone throwing a rock on top of it. When I reported it to the police, an officer told me, “If you have insurance, I can write you up a report. Otherwise, we don’t keep track of these things.” This was my welcome to Richmond, a city that works very hard to strive towards mediocrity.
I don’t think you’d hear a different response anywhere else in the WORLD. What did you expect them to do in your situation? I don’t advocate lazy policing, but a crime like that is impossible to solve unless there’s good, hard, evidence.
Police should at least take a report, and use mapping software to identify crime trouble spots. That way they can tell if rocks being thrown at a car are an isolated event or a trend that needs special policeing. To ignore the incident is to invite it to continue and spread.
