Delta Sigma Theta Alumnae House on 28th Street
The building at 1200 North 28th Street was constructed as one of earliest African American churches in Church Hill circa 1888. The former site of Good Shepherd Baptist Church was gifted to Richmond Alumnae Delta House Foundation, Inc. in 1998, and designated a historic site by Virginia Department of Historic Resources in 2001 as part of the Church Hill North National Historic District.
The renovation of this historic structure will provide the Foundation the ability to strengthen and expand the programs of the Richmond Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Additionally, this center for the community will help strengthen the infrastructure in the Church Hill North community bringing needed services to the residents.
The building’s transformation will include an elevator, handicap accessibility, updated electrical and plumbing while preserving its historic integrity.
Wow, thanks for sharing this, John. I love this building, and I’m thrilled to know it has a future. The slide show of interior images (on the sorority’s website) was pretty interesting…I hope they can keep/restore the painting/fresco on the back wall of the nave/behind where the altar once stood.
Still vacant FYI
Hmm, are we on a roll of finding out what has happened to various sites over the past couple of years, leading up to years end? If so, might include that new brick foundation wall has been installed at the former leaning house in the 300 block of 21 St.
