It Must Be Heaven closed, plans to reopen
10/29/2011 4:06 PM by John M
Just over 3 years after opening, the ice cream shop It Must Be Heaven at 25th and Broad Streets has closed their doors for at least a little while…
One of the former owners describes a messy legal situation involving the 3 partners in the LLC and the landlords which resulted in the doors being locked on Tuesday, court time, and the a 45-minute window to clear out any personal belongings left in the space.
After November 8, It Must Be Heaven will still open for catering and ice cream, all by delivery only. Call (804) 788-8158 to place an order.
The plan is to reopen with a new owner and under new management, in a new location somewhere in Church Hill, in the next 10-12 weeks.
And lower ice cream prices…?
Delivery? New owner? Messy legal situation? Please, someone have the gossip on this….
So I heard DDL is the new owner and will be reopening the store to only serve milkshakes. The delay is to allow him time to finish filming. The messy legal situation was just him coming in and drinking all their inventory without permission. To get the charges dropped he bought the place.
Just a rumor mind you…
Apparently he’s put in an order for extremely long straws.
will he be delevering the milkshakes via pee wee herman style bike? that is what I read on the “Today with Daniel Day” blog i subscribed to
#2 neighbor – I interpret ‘legal situation’ to mean eviction for not paying the rent, and ‘new owner’ to mean ‘new landlord’ or ‘owner of another building.’ I got a call from someone who witnessed the eviction, complete with supervision by a sheriff’s deputy. The people running this business didn’t own the building, they rented the space.
I was also told by that person that the process got quite loud, with someone arguing with the sheriff’s deputy and claiming that it was actually a church.
No clue what the delivery piece is, and also not sure what the health department would think about it – doesn’t the health department need an actual physical address to inspect if someone is delivering prepared food?
CRD did the argument include references to a 40 foot tall bannana split appearing to them in a dream and telling them to sell ice cream for jesus
nordy #7, I wasn’t there and just posted what I was told by a person who was and couldn’t help hearing it all (kinda hard to miss on a public sidewalk when someone is screaming and there’s a sheriff’s deputy there), but I would rather doubt the dream idea came into the argument (although it’s a good idea – *surely* the sheriff’s deputy would have taken notice at that and stopped the eviction!)
The woman who seemingly ran the place was supposedly involved in something called The Kingdom church, or so I’ve heard. If you know anything about it, do tell! I wasn’t aware that they dealt in dreams of large banana splits, but I’d love to hear about anything other than a fixation with the money collection plate!
CRD- It’s the Kingdom Hall as in Jehovah’s Witnesses.
the story I heard was that the lord came to her in a vision, told her to quit her profitable job as a lawyer, assume a lot of debt and open an ice cream parlor that charged exhorbitant amounts for hot dogs and deserts. The rest was a little bit vague.
There’s an old thread somewhere on this site that goes into details on the church aspect. I bet if you toss the store name into the search bar you’d find it.

what a bunch of jerkoffs…..you punkasses NEED anonymonity….its still no substitute for the integrity you old ladies lack. seriously you wonder why nobody posts besides you gutless twerps? the same circle jerk of cowardly gossips hiding behind their “rights”? it would be funny if you werent so pathetic. its not like a mystery hater doesnt define “impotent”by their very actions….crybabies without a conscience, cowards to the core….when you see me make sure to say “HI” neighbor!
wow, Buddy, did you miss a pill or something? This is a semi coherent rant that seems to spew anger where none is warrented. The ice cream was overpriced and they owners had a strange religious story. Both verifiable
I’m actually surprised that you’re all surprised at Buddy’s comments anymore 🙂 Keep on, keeping on, Buddy.
In my opinion, the ice cream was reasonably priced for an ice cream parlor. If you want to buy ice cream from the grocery store on the cheap, that’s your prerogative. I myself like a treat now and then, and who can beat locally made ice cream with a huge range of flavors?
Honestly though, ever heard of Schadenfreude? This was someone’s misfortune, regardless of whether you agree on how the business was run. Let’s not be so quick to rejoice. I will miss their ice cream, and hope they are able to open again soon.
It is too bad that any business that seemed to work in Church Hill had to shut down. But if there were behind the scene issues that did not warrent sound business practices, then the writing was on the wall. Just hope the new owners can be more in line with what the neighborhood wants.
if they are talking about delivering milkshakes “via pee wee herman style bike” they haven’t mentioned it to us yet!
hey It Must Be Heaven,
let Quickness RVA know if you decide to follow through with that…as long as you are legally doing it, we don’t want to risk jeopardizing something we’ve worked so hard to build up
Yea, all this hearsay isn’t healthy.
Too true Ms. Elves. I really liked their ice cream and found it to be a nice treat with friends after a long day at work. Now we will just trot down to ole Patrick Henry’s instead I guess. Same empty calories but even more incredible high jinks!
I hope they open up again soon. Their “Just Ask” flavor of ice cream, it was a mix of a bunch of stuff, was probably in my top 3 best ice creams I’ve ever tasted. I have a great memory of going with my girlfriend and not being able to help eating the entire carton at once using their tiny tasting spoons. We both thought it was too expensive to eat often, but worth it when we felt like spending the money.
What happened to their plans to reopen and/or phone deliveries? The place remains closed.
Eric, they were evicted. The building is for rent. Dunno what happened with plan to reopen or deliveries.
anonymonity just allows cowards to say shit they would never say in public. for examples please examine the previous threads denigrating the buffingtons. dont worry ,karma will come and get you when your table is ready…..thanks to all the real people who post under their own names, even and especially the ones i disagree with….the rest of you …who are you kidding?
Buddy – If you want to experience a version of CHPN where everyone has some sort of identity, check it out on Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/CHPN.RVA). All of the posts here show up there.
Note to Buddy: “Dead horse” is pleading for mercy…
We all get your (repeated) drift on anonymity, we really do get it. But please, just simmer it down some, eh…even “cowards” are allowed to have their say.
Buddy, it was just last September that someone posted in CHPN that a guy in Fairmount deserved to be shot dead because he was a “snitch”:
http://chpn.net/news/2011/09/20/killing-on-q-street_19381/
So, given that there are people in Church Hill who commit violence — and people who endorse violence against those who they deem to be “snitches” — there’s nothing inherently unscrupulous about posting anonymously if you live in Church Hill.
Are there people who say vile things under the cloak of anonymity? Yes. But there’s also people who aren’t willing to put themselves at risk in case someone over-reacts and responds violently to something that wasn’t malicious at all. So, yes, they post anonymously.
The more important point is this: Whether you post anonymously or not, be civil. If you have a criticism, air it, but keep it classy and state it in a way that offers a path for whoever you’re criticizing to improve. Don’t just talk people down and leave them no option for betterment.
No doubt, some of the criticisms that get posted on CHPN are far from being constructive, and we don’t need that. But it’s also unfair to take people who post anonymously out of a reasonable concern for personal safety and caricature them all as being no better than verbal assassins in the dark.
#26 thank you so much for posting that – and for saying it better than I could have. I post somewhat anon – I use my initials, and everyone who knows me recognizes them. I used to use my full first name, but someone related to, or involved with, the ice cream store (ironic that this is the thread I’m saying this on, but appropriate I guess) posted something threatening, and I felt pretty strange about it. I contacted John Murden, and it turned out the poster had used a fake email addy so John just deleted the post, but I felt a little afraid for some months after, and since have used only my initials.
I don’t think I’ve ever posted anything I wouldn’t want my work to know about, but that actually is another reason not to use a full name – particularly if you work in a corporate situation.
I can see the point of anonymity sometimes, but I agree that it encourages people to say ugly things they would never say with their names or faces attached. One look at the comments on any news site or Craigslist’s “rants & raves” section and you’ll see what I mean. But I do want to weigh in with a vote of support for what #26 said: “Whether you post anonymously or not, be civil.”
It’s a nice thing to do, but it also keeps you from looking like an ass if someone pulls your covers. Case in point — a while back someone posted about local coffee roasters. I posted anonymously, saying that I liked one certain local roaster, and another not so much. I actually rephrased my comment before I hit “send” so I wouldn’t sound like I was dagging anyone, just because I didn’t want to be a jerk, I was just expressing a preference. And daggone if my “anonymous” post didn’t end up having a big old photo of my face beside it because it was somehow linked to Google. It was cool, since I could stand by my comment without feeling embarrassed, and it was a good reminder: If I’m not willing to put my face beside it, maybe I should think twice about whether I want to say it.
Any updates about them reopening in a new location? Time & weather would be right for some ice cream.
A more affordable product is a must if this place ever reopens.
