Proper Pie “coming soon” on Broad Street
03/24/2012 11:28 AM by John M
The savory pie start-up Proper Pie, long rumored to be leasing on Broad Street, looks to have indeed found a home in the former It Must Be Heaven at 25th and Broad Street.
“As to their brick and mortar location, Smith envisions an “old-fashioned pie shop” serving a range of eight-to-ten seasonally-appropriate meat, vegetarian, and even vegan pies. Sitting at a counter, patrons will also be able to drink milkshakes and homemade sodas.”

Yes!!!! That’s fantastic news!
Saw the window while at the Irish Festival today. Hurray for more good eats coming to the Hill!
great folks.great food.
Hmmm… someone else who participates here mentioned starting up a local “home made soda” venture. They didn’t mention pies so wonder if the two are the same or merged?
Home made sodas… to me if you are talking about fountain drinks, I can remember as a kid old soda fountains where a squirt of cherry or vanilla syrup would be stirred into cola… taste a whole lot different than bottled junk you get today!
I’m really excited to have a pie place so close to home! and I will be there a lot….But I am worried about the name of the store running the owners into trouble; every year in St Augustine I get pies from these guys. http://www.theproperpiecompany.com/
Is this name already copyrighted?
Soooo excited about this!
based upon the logo, they serve Kiwis ground up into pies. Has anyone ever tasted their cooking or are we just foaming at the mouth about a concept?
I think they are OK. I checked the trademark and copyright office databases and don’t see anything registered as The Proper Pie or Proper Pie. The website given for the other company doesn’t show the © ™ ® marks on their site so not registered.

Welcome to the 2500 block of E. Broad Street, Proper Pie Co! It’s the best block in CH;)
@9, their pies are incredible: flaky crusts full of luscious, savory (mostly, although they do produce some dessert pies from time to time) fillings that don’t actually include kiwis. One of the co-owners in from New Zealand, hence the bird on the logo.
LOL at “Kiwis ground up into pies”! Those poor birds! I miss It Must Be Heaven so I really hope this place works out. (There were rumors that They Must be Heaven were moving to a new location after they moved from their E. Broad St location…) Pies and milkshakes sound good to me!
I was told by a resident of the building that the owner is from New Zealand, which is probably where the Kiwi Bird comes into play. I’m excited about any new food type business that moves into CH.
This is awesome. What about haggis pies?
Any updates on Proper Pie?
I heard the birds keep flying out of the pies…
Amy N-B no not a clue. I peeked in the other day, above where the paper is in the window, and there looked to be a bunch of big metal storage units in there but other than that, I couldn’t see what has been done.
What is the latest on this? Seems to be zero activity towards opening up and is going into the 3rd month since the sign was posted.

What, no one interested in this any longer? Odd, people are all for something NEW in the community but sure have short attention spans.
fyi – Proper Pie is still “coming soon,” but it looks like August according to this Richmond Times-Dispatch story.

I heard third-hand about permitting issues slowing them down. In better news, Sub Rosa Breads appears closer to opening across from the Roosevelt. Yum.
No wonder we can’t keep abreast of things. A one or two sentence mention buried in the Business section in a newspaper on the brink of bankruptcy due to lack of readers, is hardly an “announcement” and I am sure VERY easily overlooked.
i want my pie, please…
