Getting ready for Anthony’s
06/01/2012 3:32 PM by John M
Richmond Magazine says that the new pizza place opening in the old Buffington’s spot should be open in June.
“We’re going to specialize in pasta,” he says of the new restaurant, called Anthony’s on the Hill, set to open in two to three weeks. It will also serve Neapolitan-style pizza, salads and other items. […]
Since taking over the building, Calogerakis has been renovating it — painting, replacing furniture, putting in a pizza oven and installing a hood system. Anthony’s, which uses his middle name, will be open only for dinner at first. Entrée prices at the 30-seat restaurant will be in the $10 to $12 range, and it will have a neighborhood feel, Calogerakis says. “That’s what it’s aimed at.”
Hey now … according to this article the new owner used to own and bake Flour Garden breads. I think FG is some of the best bread in Richmond so this gives me hope that we might see something delicious coming out of that space.
Can’t wait!
@1 – I second the enthusiasm given the Flour Garden pedigree. There is no tastier bread in Richmond and if his crusts are half as good as the bread, this place should be awesome. Just what the neighborhood needs.
Here’s another blurb on Anthony’s from Richmond BizSense:

Pizza with actual “street cred”?! I can already feel the excitement heating up…along with the “real” ovens!
Yes, please and thank you. Agreed, Flour Garden breads can ‘t be beat. Would love to see Anthony’s retail some of the bakery’s breads – their kinds of hard to find these days. Best wishes to Mr. Calogerokis!
Chimbo Resident- House of Homemade on 27th and Marshall sells Flour Garden bread. The only drawback is they close kind of early on weeknights.
Any comment or reviews for this place? I see it is now open, for limited hours at least.
Why all the trash and knee-high weeds outside the front door….first impressions!
I thought the pizza was good, but not amazing. The crust was nice and chewy – much better than Buffington’s – and the sauce was tasty. I didn’t like the olives on my veggie pizza – they tasted really canned – and I thought there were too many toppings. My husband’s margarita looked better, but alas I can’t eat cheese (at the moment) so I didn’t taste his.
Have heard good things about the pasta so far. Looking forward to trying in the next couple of days. Anyone got a menu they can post?
We went Saturday night. The crust was very good, as was the sauce and cheese. We got the three meat but it was a little heavy, I’d go with a margherita next time. Oh–and since we were one of the first hundred customers we got free dessert, lemon cake and tiramisu. The tiramisu was a tad frozen in the middle so I suspect Costco to be the source of desserts. Overall, pretty good and I won’t complain since it’s a sixty-second walk from my place.
Had the white ‘za with arugula, no complaints, happy tummy.
The mushroom pizza was really good. Very fresh tasting mushrooms.
Great pizza! The crust made the whole thing worthwhile. So glad they are right here!
Unfortunately I have a not so good review for Anthony’s…starting with the waitress’s attitude, she was extremely rude from the moment we walked in the door, then proceeded to have a short, snappy attitude when taking our order. I wish I could comment on the food, but we decided to leave once we realized the cups and straws we were given had dirt on the inside.
