Pre-K moving from MLK Middle School
08/22/2012 7:10 AM by John M
Richmond’s East End preschool center is moving to North Side for a few years.
The city School Board approved the move on Monday, allowing administrators to move the center out of Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School on Mosby Street and into the old Norrell Elementary building on Fendall Avenue.
Superintendent Yvonne W. Brandon requested the move because of construction at King that has included the demolition of several outbuildings and the temporary consolidation of space inside the main building.
This is great news. I was a teacher at MLK last year, and that school was so overcrowded that it was bad for the teachers and the students. The student behavior was much worse than I remember from a few years ago and it was obvious that they were not able to learn in that environment. Kudos to the School Board for making this move.
That’s great for the school and I agree that it was probably extremely difficult for the teachers and the students. However, I am a parent that was pro-active in registering my children for preschool back in April, My children were set to go to VPI at MLK NEXT WEEK! The construction has been happening all last year. Who are the dumb-asses that decided to WAIT until 4 days before the school year is set to begin that the VPI will no longer be there. NO excuse for this. If they knew there was a problem last year, then it should have been taken care of last year and then ready to be implememted at the start of this year. There should NEVER have been children enrolled at MLK for VPI at all and the alternate setting should have been secured. As a working parent (also a teacher) now I am scrambling and trying to figure things out.
