Twenty or more cars have tires flattened overnight

Owners of cars parked up and down Marshall and Cedar came out this morning to find one or more tires left flat overnight in what appears to be a spree of vandalism.
Church Hill residents report tires slashed overnight

Out of curiosity, what should you do in this situation, beside filing a police report? Should this be reported to your insurance company or does that carry the risk of raising your premiums?
Who the fuck has nothing better to do with their Saturday night than this. We need to bring back stocks and pillories for crap like this. Let the owners of these cars pelt this creep with rotten fruit and veggies. Seriously, is there anything lower than messing up random folks’ cars?
As someone who had a car window shot by one of these sorts of creeps a while ago, I can tell you it’s not likely to be worth your time to get insurance involved if it’s just one tire. Most folks’ deductibles are higher. If its right above your deductible it’s probably still cheaper to go out of pocket because your rates will go up. If this guy was doing multiple tires and/or other damage was done, you may get some relief and it might be worth the time.
Vehicles vandalized in Richmond’s East End

That’s my car in the first picture. Cost me $400 for towing and new tires. NOT COOL!!!
Had my tires slashed many years ago. When the caught the perp he had to make restitution and got a check for my trouble.
This is senseless. I thought at one time they talked about banning parking along those streets because it is often a bottleneck there and dangerous. Isn’t there enough parking for residents of the Cedar Apartments where they have to park on the street? Or nearby parking lots?
I think, and I could be wrong, the apartments were required to have one spot per apartment. The apartments, last I heard, also charge for the spots, which means many elect for free street parking. Maybe someone can correct me.
I used to live in that row of houses that is not blocked by the apartments. Parking was HORRENDOUS during the day when that was still a parking lot from all of the MCV people parking during the day. I can’t imagine how bad it must suck now that those apartments are there, and even worst, the view that has gone from amazing to brick wall.
My neighbor and I have caught the kid that lives on the corner of Cedar and Jessamine trying to break into cars in broad daylight. I’ve also caught him on two different occasions stealing my landscaping bricks. Wouldn’t surprise me if he did it, even though he’s only about 10.
Many people would automatically assume the perpetrator of this crime is an African American Churchill resident hell bent on sending a message to those uppity MCV students whose parents will probably pay for the damages. I however, would bet it’s actually one of the stupid white residents of Cedar Broad who was drunk as piss Saturday night and “drunkenly” drove home, had to park more than a block away from the building and took it out on everyone else who lives there. Whatever the scenario, I hope karma gives this person a good f**king really soon. And if they’re caught, they should pay everyone who was affected no matter their fiscal abilities, whether it’s through a work release programme where they make two dollars an hour or their assets are seized and auctioned off. As much as I love “The Hill”, it’s stupid stuff like this that takes away from an otherwise amazing place to live.
11- I suspect the drunk part is pretty much a given, regardless of race. Assholes come in all colors so it wouldn’t surprise to see the perpetrator be any race. I agree with you on the punishment.
Hey guys,
My name is Nadeen Yanes, I am a reporter with 8News. Would anyone who woke up to flattened tires like to talk to me and give me more information on what happened? We might be working on this for a story today.
Just e-mail me at nyanes@wric.com
Thanks!
just a neighbor… why would an apartment complex charge for parking? Isn’t that one of the built-in perks of renting there? If not, should be.
14 – Most of the loft style complexes downtown charge. I used to live at River Lofts and there was a $30 per month charge for a spot. They have a lot of empty spots in their lots as a result.
No, no, no its not!!! ALWAYS ask if your rent includes parking. There are many many places in Richmond that do not include, or even provide, parking. There are 55 units going in behind my house and they have 7 parking spots on site. 7!!!!! All the on site parking is compact car only (and I’m talking Mini Cooper compact size) and 1 of the 7 spots is for handicapped parking. There is a dirt lot that has been leased for 2 years and is located 2 blocks away. I do not know what this city is thinking when they agree to these things and then it’s up to the tax payers to pay the price for their stupid decisions. Glad to have the building behind me renovated but am not looking forward to the parking nightmare that will start next month.
That is so absurd!
Eric: As with most amenities, some folks will want/need it and some won’t. It would be unfair to charge an all-inclusive price (with parking considered) for those without autos.
