Shots in the night?
10/10/2012 8:43 AM by John M
Anyone know anything about gunshots that went off at 3am this morning? I counted eight and live near 27th and Leigh.
It was fireworks on 28th between Marshall and Clay. Lovely, they were not.
I am pretty sure they were not shots but fireworks. Some jerks that live in that area do it every once in a while. I am calling the police next time.
We live on Marshall and 28th and heard the same thing. Glad to hear that it was fireworks and not gun shots.
Indeed, not lovely at all. I was up all night afterward, but since I didn’t hear sirens right away, I assumed they were fireworks.
Ahh Church Hill, won’t miss you when I leave soon. This just one of many reasons.
Just had 10 shots go off at 27th and P, could actually hear several of them whiz past my daughter’s window just a few feet away. Seriously can’t wait to get out of this war zone of a neighborhood.
More shots tonight – about 8 of them around 11:10. Called 1st precinct and they’d heard them too and were responding. This is getting a little crazy.
Apparently we just needed to wait until tonight for the real shooting. Came across radio of reported shooting on 38th st with something about a pursuit of suspect. Wondering what all happened.
yeah, usual stuff in CH, people getting robbed, shot, murdered. Why should I settle in this neighborhoood? This type of thing is not something a sensible family needs to be around, especially those that have an ability to leave. I can see why people ask me, why I would want to raise a family in CH, the Fan or VCU districts.
Here’s what you heard: http://chpn.net/news/2012/10/11/fatal-shooting-on-q-street_24525/
When you hear the shots, always call the police! Wouldn’t you rather have them respond, even if it turns out to ONLY be fireworks?
I too was awake at around 3:20am when I heard the shots that almost sounded like were on our street near 27th and Clay. The first thing that woke me out of a sound sleep was what I thought was a “clap” of what sounds like a bundle of wood hitting the street then right afterwards i heard the shots. So loud I was waiting to hear glass break or something.
Not sure what is happening in our neighborhood? This kind of events were going on when we first moved in 1999 but cleaned up as houses were being restored. New Years and 4th of July was like little Vietnam happening then but stopped completely except for a few fireworks. Now it seems the bad elements are moving back in… economy? Not selling houses (aka 5th most “empty” city in America?).
Gentrification seems to have halted.
Eric
I wish I could get my children and I out of this neighborhood. The shooting that did happen around 11 was four houses down from me. My kids play with the kids that live there and I know the female survivor that’s fighting for her life….smh…this is ridiculous.
Kayla,
I am sorry that your children has to go throgh such an ordeal let alone yourself. In years past it took a tough person to stick it out in hopes the neighborhoods and its stigma tagged on it for many years, to be reversed. It was for a long time but ever since the housing market bottomed out things are slowing reverting back to old ways.
I put the blame partly on developers who are building a glut of one-bedroom cheap apartments and small condos which is hurting “home” sales. The age bracket of people buying houses now are more in tune of simplicity and no fuss which means older homes that dominate Church Hill and surounding areas are becoming neglected again. No buyers nor interest by young people who want to spend their time restoring or maintaining a house. So they are being rented out to low income and whoever has the down payment and the blocks becoming pre 1990 era crime once again.
Eric
Eric, it is hard to see your post knowing people from other parts of Richmond/Virginia/ or the United States might see it. However, your opinion is just that your opinion and we all have one. The opinion of Church hill among some of us is that the renovation process has somewhat slowed, but is still making great strides (even in this horrible economy).
In reference to the apartments (I assume you are referring to) are not low-end apartment’s example Lava apartments, Cedar Broad apartments, and Atrium apartments. The owner of Lava apartments and Cedar Broad apartments proposed a high-end condominium development at the end of Broad St. and the neighbors fought her so hard until the economy started turning south. Therefore, the owner of the land has decided not to build the condominiums in the immediate future.
There have been a ‘LOT’ of improvements in Church hill over the last ten years, and it continues to improve.
Have you been observing the immediate area where you live, there’s a new restaurant about to open along with a bakery on two of Charlie’s corners, and the other two aren’t as much of an eye sore as they were during his life. The man who owns 401 N. 27th Street has refused offers to buy his building because he wants far more than a shell is worth. In reference to 401 (isn’t someone living on the second floor, and isn’t it a code violation for someone to live in a condemned building?). Why haven’t you complained to the city or have you in reference to the barber shops facing Marshall St. for painting half of the building, and not getting ARC’s approval for the color or to only paint half of the front.
In addition to the block you live there are two houses being completely gutted and renovated due to a fire. It is very sad the two men living at 415 were displaced due to the fire, but it does improve the value of the block (if a positive side can come from someone losing their home to fire).
Church Hill is a great neighborhood, and I will be the first to admit we still have a ways to go. However, there have been huge improvements in the years I have been involved in this neighborhood. And there might be people who are moving because of some gun fire, but don’t think moving anywhere in the city of Richmond accept ‘THE REAL WEST END’ (meaning CCV, U/R , Hampton Gardens, Hillcrest, etc. you are not going to hear gun fire. I have friends who live in Windsor Farms that hear gunfire from the Maymount / Randolph area.
In reference to Eric, posting property owners are only renting to low income people. I own property in Church hill and none of them is rented to low income people. Anyway, are you implying all low-income people are criminals, when did you become one of the upper income people? I’ll admit I’d much rather have higher income people live in Church hill, but not all poor people are criminals anymore than all high income people never commit crimes.
A great example, I had a friend in college his parents were both from very wealthy families + one of his parents was a lawyer and one a psychiatrist. He used to steal all the time from major dept. stores for fun (I know his great, great grandparents were probably poor people and he inherited their genes for stealing).
In reference to the ones that posted they are moving because of fear, I have no hard feelings for anyone moving due to fear. IF a person does not feel safe in their own home, and can afford it they should move. There is nothing more paralyzing than feeling afraid in your own home. Good luck to you. 🙂
Anyone else hear 4-5 gunshots at 10:50 tonight?
I did. I was wondering where it was. It seemed to have been near 25th street, 700-800 block.
I heard that too. I don’t *think* it was gunfire. It sounded too broad, if that makes sense.
It was right behind my house in the alley. I don’t know what it was but it scared the SHIT out of me. 800 block of 25th St is where I live.
It also didn’t “sound” exactly like gun shots i had heard before, but I don’t pretend to know all the sounds of all the guns out there. All I know is it was WAY too close.
I live in the 300 block of 32nd and it woke me up. It was very loud. I reported it to the police. I really thought it was gunshots but very happy if it was not.
Lucky Canine #20, I always call the police when I hear what could be shots.
#19 neighbor: I can’t tell the difference between fireworks and gun shots all the time either, hence my rule is always call 911 and report it.
#14 annoyed: In general I agree with you. I’ve lived up here since the late 1970s and have seen great change for the better.
Probably just folks preparing for their post-election celebrations tonight.
Totally unrelated, but is it just me or are the time/date signatures for comments going wonky? Every comment here reads as being posted either minutes or hours ago, but I know some of these are from almost a month ago.
Same thing on other pages.
Yep.
Anyone hear gunshots last night (5/24/15) on 25th Street and E. Grace / E. Broad at about 3am?
I heard something from our outpost on M Street at about that time, not awake enough to play the “was that a gunshot?” game very well 🙂
We heard six shots that sounded like a handgun at 1:15. Hard to tell where they were actually coming from.
Heard it too, thinking they were fireworks since it was just two shots ( one fire) twice about an hour apart. By 23 and broad .
I agree. To me it sounded like it was on Richmond Hill, but 23/broad area. Loud enough that it made my dog growl on 21st.
