Long a flashpoint of neighborhood complaint, the Blue Wheeler store at 32nd and Marshall Streets has undergone a recent facelift.
Great facelift. Looks like “Extreme Makeover 40 shoppe edition” came to town!
It’s a Thanksgiving miracle!
Same owners at Clay Street Market (Sean, etc) who also opened their front windows up. Great job on this.
Now they just need to put some of these on the door stoop to the left:

Wow! That looks great!!!
Yes, there was significant neighborhood involvement and we will continue to work with the BW on improvements to the exterior, as well as improvements to the products they carry. If you are willing to give the BW a try, please let them know what you would like them to carry. I suggested organic milk. Also let them know what you don’t like. For me, the resident drug dealer that does business on their corner, the panhandling, the public intoxication issues and the bowls and pipes that they have front and center on display.
NIce that the owners are willing to listen.
I used to live by the BW. I was only white guy in a four block radius. Never got messed with, in fact I loved my ‘hood. That was ’95.
Let’s be honest here, great, there was significant neighborhood involvement, but its only because the neighborhood has gotten more ‘white’ and has a bit more dough to spend. Otherwise BW would still be the same. I love it how ‘white’ people think they are changing Church Hill. Its your money thats changing it, and the fact y’all are all coming back to the area. Such visionaries I tell ‘ya.
I can argue the fact that the gentrification of such a wonderful neighborhood is a good thing, but also its drives away long time residents. Its a catch 22 I tell ya, and I ain’t talking about .22 no mo.
Looks Clean! Big windows for all!
Wow, did anyone else see the black friday lines at the Wheeler? They went halfway round the block for doorbuster deals on fortys and smokes
Actually, Hopper, the numbers show that poor urban neighborhoods that do not get infusions of mixed income people actually depopulate faster than neighborhoods where so-called gentrification displacement occurs. Dilapidation and lack of goods and services displaces people far more effectively than yuppies.
HHB ,way to post anonymous racebaiting drivel. I know youre not a coward ,just a free speech fan right? Way to make a page irrelevant…..Its comforting to know the same goofs are running the page to the detriment of the discussions. Now jump up and bang your keyboard in your mighty secretive wrath. What a smoking turd…….
Honey badger don’t care that they’re an idiot. Forties. It’s called spelling; look into it.
I am shocked to say that I agree with a Buddy Corbett post. Nothing personal against you, Buddy Corbett (if that is, in fact, your real name), as I have never met you. I am sure you are delightful in person. I do, however, find your manner of expression offensive and crude but in this case there was a touch of relevance. Yes, the management of the BW is reaching out to those who have not previously set foot inside their store. There is no race card to play here. There are people of all races that have found the BW not to their liking for many reasons. But the owner has spent money from his own pocket (he does not own the building itself) for renovations in hopes of attracting more customers. I myself have vacillated wildly between support and frustration with this establishment. As long as the BW tries to change, I will try to support them. It is in the best interest of the neighborhood and I hope others will give the store a chance.
Lucky Canine,
In post #8 you say there was “significant neighborhood involvement” and “we will continue to work with BW…”. Could you explain a little bit about that statement? Who is “we” and what type of “neighborhood involvement” are you referring to? I am very happy to see the facade improvements and am just curious about the process and players involved in the transformation.
That’s great. Hopefully this could cause a few other similar locations to follow suit.
Would LOVE to see some craft beer carried there. I live a block away and am always sad at the selection. I’ll see if I can get ’em to pick some up. How cool would it be to have a Patterson Express equivalent on this side of town?
“We” are the people that live in the blocks around the BW. A group of us got together because we were concerned about some issues in our neighborhood – several burglaries, drugs, public intoxication, loitering, panhandling, etc. We worked with RPD and the owner of the BW. We suggested the windows and the owner of the BW embraced the suggestion. We are hoping that the store looks better (I think it does) and that the windows will help the BW monitor the exterior of their store. As for products, please take your suggestions to the BW staff. They are anxious for your business. Tell them what you want – take them an empty bottle so they can see it and show it to their supplier.
PSA: We went in there this weekend and they had beers from Hardywood, Devil’s Backbone, Dogfish Head, and 21st Amendment. I’m pretty happy with that as a start. If we buy all that, chances are good they’ll keep stocking those kinds of beers.
While you’re buying all the new, good beer, make sure you also tell them what you don’t want, i.e. bowls, 40’s, individual cigars, rolling papers, hair nets and all the other junk sitting on the counter. If you want the litter, panhandling, and drunks to disapear I encourage you to voice your opinion to them. All of the good beer in the world won’t keep that nonsense away as long as they are still selling the same old crap. Glad to see the windows, hopefully it’s a step in the right direction.
