Council’s last chance to approve Riverfront Plan before deadline
JAMES RIVER ACTION ALERT
Richmond Riverfront Plan Under Attack. Your Help is Needed.
Urge City Council to approve the Riverfront Plan on Monday Night, November 26.Despite an extensive 2-year planning process, expertise from the world’s premier riverfront planning firm and broad public support, the Riverfront Plan is under threat to be sent back to the drawing board. A last minute amendment proposed by land developers would delay the draft plan beyond the December 3 deadline and send the plan back to the beginning of the plan approval process. The delay would mean that current funding to begin implementation of the plan would be lost. Additionally, the amendment proposes to change the language in the plan on two key land parcels – Mayo Island and the USP/Tarmac site – from the carefully negotiated language included in the already approved Downtown Master Plan and remove reference to public parkland on these two parcels that are critical to the Riverfront Plan.

Approve the damn thing already. If for no other reason than to stop the city from spending any more money on these stupid studies…
At the City Council’s Land Use meeting on November 20, one of the Council members (Robertson) said that the USP developer’s requested changes were “minor.” In fact, they would undue key elements of the Riverfront Plan AND the Downtown Master Plan. The USP developer’s changes would remove the park option from the plan, limit what counts as protected scenic views, and open the area up for high-rise hotel towers next to Tobacco Row in the flood zone.
There are some total, counterproductive idiots on this City Council. Fortunately, two of them are on their way out the door. I’m Thankful for that!
Why weren’t these changes requested before?? Sounds like a dirty trick to scuttle the whole thing to me.
