Ocean Grocery sells $1,000,000 lottery winner

The Virginia Lottery said this morning that a ticket for Wednesday night’s drawing, purchased at Ocean Grocery in the 2400 block of Venable Street, matched the first five numbers but not the Powerball number.

I don’t like going negative on this good news, but this $$ could indirectly be a curse. (too much, too fast, plus people are jealous and could do harm). Still, congrats to the winner!

Unfortunately the place that sold it is a magnet for loiterers and drunks…maybe the owners will use their sales bonus to clean the place up and make it a little less of a dump.

Ocean’s gets a percentage of the amount as well, right? Hopefully they use that to continue the work they’ve been doing on the place. Looking at the picture above helps me to appreciate the clearing of that lot and the mural (as interesting as it is…)

In the late ‘80s, back when it was AJ’s Market, the place was robbed at gunpoint twice.

In ‘86, a security guard shot a 16-year-old robber inside, records show.

The area out back and down Venable was a notorious drug market for a generation. Old men and even an old woman were robbed at gunpoint outside in 2002 and 2003. (A large retirement home is right down the street.)

In 2008 a teen was shot and wounded out there. Another was injured by gunfire the next year.

But perhaps the unluckiest day was in October of 1990, when a female motorist drove her car into store, collapsing a brick wall that fell on store clerk Julian Wilson, who was crushed to death.

Ron Peyton also won $1 million in the Powerball drawing just a week later. He bought his ticket for the December 5 drawing at the Ocean Grocery on Venable Street. Peyton also used Easy Pick to select his numbers. The winning numbers for the December 5 drawing were 13-17-19-27-38, and the Powerball number was 12.

According to the article in #7, each store (Kroger and Ocean Grocery) also got $10,000 for selling the ticket. So Ocean Grocery got a nice chunk of change out of this.
