FOR PURE BLOOD
01/04/2013 6:50 PM by John M
Via Helen Keller and the Temple of Doom:
One of my favourite things about Richmond, aesthetically, is how most of the buildings still have their 1800’s (historical guesstimate) adverts visible, and not covered over. This was my favourite one…I wonder what they thought ‘pure blood’ entailed?
The “pure blood” meaning changed in ads over the years suggesting health, vigor/strength, their last campaign was sex appeal. The first health ads were posted in the obit section.

Ah, yes, for all the Mudbloods out there.
Where is S. 25th St.? There is a curb where the road is now. Or is this a different intersection?
Sorry…wrong intersection…I was thinking of UNEEDA Biscuit 🙁
The sign on the building above is actually at 2007 Venable off Mosby in the Fairmont section.
Most of these signs – often refered to as “ghost signs”, were more common in the early to mid 20th century. Don’t think they did this in the 1800s.
georut… people sometimes, even the post office (go figure) gets the addresses mixed up. There are equal bilding numbers on numbered streets north and south of the river such as N 25th and W 25th. Haven’t heard of a S 25th. The Uneeda sign is at N 25th across from St. John’s church.
Also some other confusion about street names come from North or South of Broad Street. The name still remains North (ie N 25th). House numbers 0-299 are South of Broad and numbers 300-onwards are North of Broad but house 100 is still 100 N 25th, etc…
