RPS Open Enrollment meeting next week at Chimborazo

Richmond Public Schools officials have announced the start of the district’s Open Enrollment process for the 2013-14 school year. This process provides more options for Richmond parents by allowing students the opportunity to attend schools outside of their zoned school.

The Open Enrollment window for the 2013-14 school year will begin February 1 and will end February 15 at 4:30 p.m. Parents interested in having their child attend a school outside of their “zoned school” must complete an application during this time frame.

Students who apply via the Open Enrollment process are placed in a lottery for each grade level at each chosen school. Key factors that determine placement include how many out-of-zone spaces a school has, as well as the number of lottery applicants.

Parents whose children are currently in Open Enrollment have been asked to submit an Intent to Return Form through January 31, 2013.

“The district’s Open Enrollment process provides more opportunity for Richmond-based parents to secure an educational environment that is the best fit for their child’s social and academic needs. Although the process is intensive, we try to make it as seamless as possible,” said Harry Morgan, director of pupil personnel.

Four informational sessions will be held in the upcoming weeks to assist parents with the Open Enrollment process:

January 16—12:30 p.m.
Southampton ES
3333 Cheverly Rd.

January 17—12:30 p.m.
Chimborazo ES
3000 East Marshall St.

January 23—5:30 p.m.
Ginter Park ES
3817 Chamberlayne Ave.

January 24—5:30 p.m.
Mary Munford ES
211 Westmoreland Ave.

The application process to attend one of Richmond’s specialty schools, Richmond Community High School, Open High School and Franklin Military Academy, is unique to each school. For details regarding the application process, parents must contact the individual specialty school or visit each school’s website.
