Murder at record low

With only 4 killings, the 1st quarter homicide count in Richmond is at a record low:

While it is early, the homicide rate in Richmond is setting a record, but in a good way. There have been only four murders so far this year. Authorities said Monday, that’s the lowest number per quarter on record.

To someone who hasn’t been in this city for decades, it might sound callous to say we’re in “a good place” when it comes to murders. Monday, prosecutors said their experience shows they have good reason to say that and they’ve worked hard for those words.

Two of the 4 killings have been in the East End, the other 2 were in Southside. 2009 and 2012 are the best two years on record for the East End of at least the last 50 or so, with each only seeing 9 killings. The East End saw 41 killings in 1993, and 34 in 1994.
