The Richmond Police Department is in the early stages of a homicide investigation in the East End this morning.
At approximately 11:53 p.m. on Sunday, May 26, officers heard gunshots and received a call for random gunfire in the 2700 block of Q Street. Officers were on scene in less than a minute and found a black male in his early 30s dead of an apparent gunshot wound.
This is the 5th killing in the East End this year, and the 12th in Richmond.

“I started calling around and somebody told me that it was Smurf, ” she added. She explained to us that she knew the victim since he was a toddler. […] Friends and neighbors tell CBS 6 News the victim they call “Smurf” is Robert Bowman, Jr.
My deepest sympathies to Mr.Bowman’s family.
The Richmond Police Department has identified the man found shot to death late Sunday night as Robert L. Bowman Jr., 31, of the 1200 block of North 27th Street.
At approximately 11:53 p.m. on Sunday, May 26, officers heard gunshots and received a call for random gunfire in the 2700 block of Q Street. Officers were on scene in less than a minute and found Bowman shot to death outside.
Detectives believe robbery may have been the motive and are following up on several leads.
They are asking anyone with any information about this crime to call Crime Stoppers at 780-1000 or text Crime Stoppers at 274637, using the key word “ITip” followed by your tip. Both methods are anonymous.
This is the EXACT same location the teenager was shot and killed in a drive by a few months ago. As I stood there talking to at the time Chief Norwood looking at the kid’s body under a blanket I told him this will happen again at intersection if they don’t do something serious to address it and sadly I’ve been proven correct. At that corner in one year we have had two murders, a home invasion with two people shot, a shooting with a person shot in the leg, a shooting that resulted in a bullet through my wife’s car, a driveby shooting that resulted in a house being shot up, and four seemingly random shootings with no known victims and a robbery where the victim was stripped naked and beaten. We’ve also had regular screaming matches in the middle of the street that dispatch refuses to respond to because as they say “umm arguing isn’t illegal, call us if they start physically fighting or shooting”. The police always maintained these were each isolated random incidents with no connection to that particular corner and said there is absolutely nothing they can do to prevent crime, they can only respond once it happens. Yesterday we got a flyer in our mailbox asking for information on this murder, so I’m encouraged to see maybe the police are trying some extra outreach these days and I know RPD has an extremely difficult job, but when they are told they’ve got a hot spot in that location that they can target and stop some real crime, its unfortunate that they ignored this and now another person has been murdered there.
