Franklin Military valedictorian named Gates Millennium Scholar
Richmond City high school senior Joshua Young has been named a 2013 Gates Millennium Scholar, the nation’s largest minority scholarship program funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
Young is also the 2013 valedictorian of Franklin Military Academy with a 4.49 grade point average. He plans to attend the University of Richmond to study communications and hopes to eventually join the military.
According to Young, the scholarship will afford him an opportunity to receive a higher education that may have been more challenging to achieve. “I am so grateful for this unbelievable opportunity to go the college of my choosing to pursue my dream of a career in communications.”
The Gates Millennium Scholars program selects 1,000 students nationwide each year to receive a renewable college scholarship to use at any college or university of their choice for undergraduate through graduate studies. In addition to the scholarship, the program provides Gates Millennium Scholars with personal and professional development through its leadership program and academic support.
