Richmond’s Best

Richmond Magazine’s annual Best & Worst issue is out and, as always, has much recognition for the area. Super awesome is Proper Pie’s Nikki and Neil on the cover!
- Church Hill won for Best New Urban Community, #2 for Neighborhood with Most Interesting Architecture, and #3 for Most Dog Friendly Neighborhood
- Proper Pie scored 3rd in Best New Restaurant and #1 for Best Pie
- Libby Hill won Best Scenic View
- Church Hill Dog Park #3 for Best Dog Park
- Pets at Play #3 Best Doggie Day Care
- Sub Rosa #3 Best Locally Made Bread
- The Roosevelt #3 Best Porkbelly, #1 for Best Locally Themed Cocktail, #2 Most Creative Menu
- Alamo BBQ #3 Best Barbecue
Having not picked up an issue (which would require pants) can someone say what actually beat Sub Rosa in the Best Locally Made Bread category?
Montana Gold Bread company and Billy Bread were Nos. 1 and 2 in the best bread category, respectively. No accounting for taste, I suppose. Sub Rosa is without parallel, and I hope to see them back soon.
And who, pray tell, has better pork belly?
The timing of this issue is less than ideal for Proper Pie. My guess is that they will miss most of the momentum and possible new visitors they otherwise could get from this by being closed all month.
Are they closed for a month? Why?

I love love love this neighborhood!!!
Unfortunately, closing for a month is not a great way to keep one’s business momentum going…
@8 – based on what I’ve seen, I’m not too worried about their overall business as they’ve got a line pretty much all day. It just seems weird to pose for a cover of a magazine that will likely broaden your business’s exposure and then head out for a month.
From what I’ve seen, Richmond magazine seems to be heavily suburban focused and my guess is that a lot of their readership is from outside the area that has seen proper pie before.
Too bad they couldn’t trust their staff to run the place while they were gone. I agree with Alex that posing for a cover and then skipping town for a month is bad business planning. I’m assuming the trip was planned before the cover, but seems they have a big enough staff that someone there should have been able to hold down the fort while they were gone.
I seriously doubt that Proper Pie’s going to lose business being closed for a month. We all forget that one of the owners is from New Zealand, which is a MAJOR TREK from the east coast of the U.S. Neil and Nikki have poured a lot of time, effort and money into getting Proper Pie off the ground. It’s been a raging success and in my opinion they deserve to go home to NZ to see loved ones and let them know they’re the pride of Church Hill. The crowds will be just as big in September, trust me.
Oh – I am not doubting that their business will be there when they return. But that doesn’t negate bad timing.
Trish- I don’t think anyone is saying they don’t deserve to go back to visit family, because they absolutely do. That place is awesome and I for one definitely think they have been a fabulous addition to the neighborhood!
However, I have also wondered, like #10, why they can’t promote a staff person to manager to run the place while they’re gone? And how does the staff actually feel about being out of a job for a month? Are they being paid while the owners are gone? I know I couldn’t live day-to-day without my paycheck for a whole month. They deserve the vacation but it doesn’t make sense to close your store when you have so many staff that could potentially pick up the slack while you are away.
I don’t think anybody but Neil makes the pies–it’s not like they’re getting them off the Sysco truck. Maybe the counter girls moved on because school’s starting soon. We don’t know what arrangements were made but I’m sure someone would be screaming about it somewhere on the web if something bad had happened.
