New trio of dangerous dogs
08/25/2013 10:51 AM by John M
From a reader in Union Hill:
It looks like we have three dogs with collars…a tan one,a jack russel mix and a black dog killed my ol maine coon kitty this am. Tell people to watch out for these dogs…
Is it really necessary to call dogs “dangerous” when they are just doing what dogs inherently know how to do? Seems like we are creating fear where fear may not be necessary. Just because a dog kills a cat doesn’t mean it is a danger to society. There aren’t may dogs I know who wouldn’t run after a cat or other small animal for that matter unless they were raised from birth with cats. And even then, they may be inclined to chase other small animals who are not the cat they know.
So sorry! Where was this? It sounds like 2 of them could be the ones that attacked my dog a few months back. One big, white and tan, the other a terrier mix?
@1 – are you stereotyping dogs?
just a neighbor: Even still… my dog chases cats unless he knows them and I introduce them properly….but there is no way I would let him roam the neighborhood going on a cat killing spree.
If they are loose and roaming around killing things, how is that NOT dangerous?
My dog couldn’t be any sweeter. But given the chance, he’d take out a cat or a possum in a second. It’s just in his nature. He’s not “dangerous”, though he’s not running around the neighborhood unattended. The owners of these dogs are at fault and should be held responsible.
Also, sorry you lost your kitty. We all hate to lose a pet.
sounds like they’re dangerous to other animals
@ “Just a neighbor”- would you go to someone’s funeral and say “He shouldn’t have smoked cigarettes”? Yes dogs pack up and Yes dogs shake cats. But there was just no point in going there, here, and now. Your point is Not Well Taken. And consider this: if they’re happy to attack other animals, it might be a kid next. Or it might be You.
Nice response from just a neighbor to someone who just lost their cat. So killing an animal doesn’t make them dangerous to other pets in the area?
my dad just spotted all three dogs behind our house on n. 22nd in Union Hill, between Venable and Carrington. They were moving East he said down Carrington. I hope they don’t mess with any of my neighbor Buddy’s cats! Dad said he also saw them going after a raccoon the other day (not that out of the ordinary). He said he thinks all three did have collars. There is no excuse for why people don’t have their dogs inside their home or on a leash.
Yes if people’s pets are killing other people’s pets I think that classifies them as dangerous (how can you friggin’ argue with that.)
I am sorry, they were spotted about 20 mins ago between 22nd and Jessamine.
I think those three include the one referenced above as being from behind Bloomfields Store. I agree: its tough to blame these dogs as being dangerous/violent. They’re just being dogs. I think they also killed an urban chicken in Union Hill last week.
The owner(s) of these dogs need to be held accountable. There’s a stiff fine for unleashed dogs in the Richmond and it’s about time the City started enforcing it’s leash laws. If that were my cat this dog pack killed, I’d be heartbroken. Do those who post that “it’s just dogs being dogs” have no compassion, or tact for that matter?
Is one a boxer mix? If so its possible they have been doing this for years. Also has anyone called animal control?
My husband and I lost our dog in the area almost 3 weeks ago now but have gotten a call that he was spotted- his name is Journey and he has a red collar and has a white chest but otherwise a brown/ black brindle stripe. He is friendly but not likely to come to strangers- please let me know if you think one of these dogs is him. Thank you.
@#1 ‘just being dogs’? I know they’re following their dog nature by chasing and killing cats, but that statement misses the point that they destroyed someone’s cat, a family member for all intents and purposes. And that the owner of the dogs is an irresponsible prick who shouldn’t have dogs if he can’t care for them in a socially acceptable manner.
I mean, if rats started chewing through your walls, would you blow it off becasue they were just following their nature? What about termites? Snakes keeping warm in your bed? Of course not! You’d want the animal to be stopped before it did you or others harm.

And…
No, this is not actual “dog” nature. Ues, dogs have a primary chase instinct and cats have a primary flight instinct. But…properly trained, socialized and cared for dogs do not and should not exhibit behavior this aggressive.
If you adopt a dog exhibiting such aggessive behaviors, then it is your responsibility, when living in such a close community, to ensure its managed properly: observed, trained and monitored at all times. If thats unacceptable then as a dog owner and a citizen, you’re a failure in my opinion and should just kill yourself.
A dog was killed last week by two dogs being walked, it was basically broken in two. This is ok? People, you really think you want pets like this living next door to you? You have GOT to be kidding.
The fact that people think this is ok makes me really wonder what you idiots will think after the inevitable child mauling/killing that is more than likely just around the corner.
Also, this is why I am leaving Church Hill and taking my pets elsewhere for everything, ever. I dont want them killed just because I chose to take them for a walk on leash.
I can say, if I was walking my dogs and the three dogs that did this or the two that killed the little dog last week attacked, I would beat the living shit out of the owner for being reckless and the dogs, too.
Hey folks,
Let’s take it easy on each other. Dogs running loose is something that occasionally happens, and we just have to be vigilant and *proactive*. The # to Animal Control is: 646-5123. I’d rather see these dogs returned to (caring) owners than be picked up by A C. However, any dog roaming freely that can be *proven* to have attacked other dogs, cats or etc. has to be dealt with. *Some* animals like this are not (in my layman opinion) beyond being rescued and trained properly.
Lastly @ “All Bark”:
I live in Union Hill, and consider my neighborhood a great place for people with all kinds of pets. I do, however, acknowledge that I live in the City. My close friend and neighbors dog was run over before his eyes, but this is a known danger we all face and must accept as a part of living in a busy, urban setting.
Obviously this subject will stir the passions of those who (rightly) want to protect there pets and family members.
Sorry, dogs shouldn’t be out roaming the streets. It’s that simple. If their owners gave a flying fart they’d keep them inside or in a yard. I think it’s really terrible that a cat died because of these dogs. And imagine if someone had tried to intervene and save the cat–would they have been bitten too?
Also–not that I’m a proponent of this, as I love all animals–isn’t there a law regarding dogs that kill urban chickens? I feel like it say something along the lines of the dog can be shot if it kills a chicken. The owners of the dogs would do well to remember that. I certainly am not going to go shoot a dog, but who’s to say someone else wouldn’t?
Anyone who’s walked on O Street knows how those dogs behind Bloomfield’s are treated, and what they accordingly think of people and other dogs. Blame the owner; where’s the outrage, etc. etc. etc.
I’m so sorry to hear about the original poster’s cat. Losing a pet is always hard, and when it’s violent and unexpected, that just compounds the loss.
The Richmond City Code is very specific about dangerous dogs, and these dogs definitely fit the description. Chapter 10, Division 3, Section 10.171 spells out the owner’s responsibilities, and the City can charge the owner with a class 1 misdemeanor for failing to comply with the regulations. I can’t provide a link to the specific chapter, division, and section, but here’s a link to the entire City code: http://library.municode.com/index.aspx?clientID=16118&stateID=46&statename=Virginia
And JessOfRVA, you’re partially correct: if a dog is found in the act of killing a chicken, the person finding it may kill it whether it’s an Animal Control officer or a private citizen. See the same chapter and division of the City Code, Section 10.90.
Well, once again the losers take over an announcement meant to help people. It was my cat that was murdered and listening to a punch of mystery pukes lend their two cents just makes a bad situation worse. When you idiots take a minute to reflect on your unwanted blathering you might try to remember the death of a beloved animal companion. Keep running your suckholes…..Oh and yes I have found out who you various toughtalking nimrods are. It wasnt hard to find out and I look forward to laughing ……..a lot…. as I ponder the reality of HOW you write vs. who you ,sadly, really are ….Too funny ,and its the only funny thing about this incident . Alex,I know why you post anonymously. I would too if I was a worm like you……..That said, take credit for your contributions. What kind of neighbors wont converse except behind a wall of secrecy? “Just a neighbor?? Its my nature to crush losers who talk shit. Luckily for you I am a man and not a dog huh you mouthy sadsack? To people who post under your names thank you. The rest? meh…….
I will never understand why there are so many “outside” cats living in Church Hill. If you love your cats, bring them inside. When I lived in Church Hill, there was a similiar case and people were outraged. I just don’t get it.
Well Buddy’s right in the fact that this announcement was meant to help people protect their pets. Plain and simple.
I knew the particular cat who was killed. It was a beautiful, healthy, friendly cat who was indoor/outdoor. I am deeply saddened to hear of its passing and will sure miss her!
However I still feel bad for the dogs and don’t think they deserve to be shot. My dad just moved here from rural southern va and says this kind of thing happens all the time down there when the hunting dogs get lost and pack up. they kill, livestock, cats etc. I reminded him and myself…Well this is a CITY, hello!
Buddy, my sincere sympathies for your cat. Sorry for your loss.
For what it’s worth, I’m not posting under a partial name so people I know won’t know who it is. I’m posting so random jackasses who don’t know when I’m joking won’t do the kind of cowardly shit that was going on during the recent CHA mess. If you want to post under your real name, good for you. Anyone who knows me knows this is my identity on here.
So sorry about your kitty Buddy. It’s never easy losing something you love. Losing to something so senseless and preventable, hurts all the more.
All done talking. Good luck with anonymous shit talking. I will personally no longer participate in a forum populated by so called neighbors who dont have enough integrity to let people know who they are. I will say it again. I have worked around the worst kinds of drunks and druggies and I have never heard the kind of bullshit and abuse vomited up by an anonymous group of losers who apparently feel liberated enough by their secrecy to talk mad shit. I think maybe the lowest point yet was reached when Bob Buffingtons wife got sick and one of you brave citizens felt compelled to tell everyone that her illness didnt mean a thing to them and really they were only concerned about the state of their pizza…. Thats what your anonymonity means;the freedom to say crap that no real good person would say. Dont look for me to change my tone when dealing with that kind of trash. Shame doesnt even start to describe what you should be feeling. I dont have to be decent to anybody that low……and the snarky comments about the death of my furry friend? His litter box smells better than any of ya……Please return to your regular “discourse”,and karma will soon see to you….
Buddy,
Condolences on the loss of your cat.
I wish I could leave it at that, but this was completely preventable and occurs when reasonable people do nothing either because they have lack of will, lack of knowledge or bystander effect, who knows. None of these are valid excuses.
You see roaming or off leash or aggressive dogs, you know of a pack of aggressive dogs or people who don’t care for their pets? Call Animal Control 646-5573.
Every time. And stay on it until you get results.
As it stands now, basically in one week, two different packs of dogs-owned by members of our community-have killed other peoples pets, a dog and Buddy’s cat.
That seems wrong to me.
Buddy, I suggest you go up to First Precinct and file a formal complaint regarding the dogs that killed your cat.
If you don’t, and it happens again, to your pet or someone else’s pet-or child-by these dogs, know it was in your power to try to make a change.
Contact animal control and be on the lookout. That’s all we really can do at this point. If you’re an owner of any type of animal please be responsible and keep the dog on a leash and your cat indoors.
