Gillies Creek Anti-Federalists
mikle_RVA’s A Rant: Gillies Creek Anti-Federalists via reddit/rva:
I was out with my frenz to play a nice game of disc golf when we saw this homemade sign screwed into the City of Richmond’s Gillies Creek official signage
— blood red ink that said “Make the DC Shutdown Permanent.”
Of course, the habitual leftist that I am decided that it was unfit propaganda for the park, vandalism in my eyes … so i took the sign down. The irony of being in a public park was too much and I didn’t imagine that anyone who actually spent any time there could have put it up. That was hole 1.
We come around to hole 12 and we see that dang sign, rescrewed, this time into a beautiful tree who I can only imagine is indifferent to congressional duels, the Affordable Care Act, and pretty much anything that humans talk about. Literally ZERO people at this disc golf park are IN CONGRESS.

Anybody else see these signs? OR HAVE A PHOTO?
A true “leftist” would have left it up. Freedom of speech and all that mess being a hallmark of classic liberalism (though whoever posted this should have used more discretion in hanging locations).
But I thought Bobby Scott was a rampant disc golfer
Alex- but there is freedom of speech….”as long as you agree in what I believe”.
Bobby Scott couldn’t find his way to Gillie’s Creek if he tried. How we have him as a “local representative” is beyond me.
Defacing property, public or private, is not protected speech. If the party who placed the signs elected to appear in the park, in person, for the much favored Churchillian lively debate – that would be free speech.
@4 – I tend to agree with you on that but for the fact that the poster makes it pretty clear why he tore the signs down. I didn’t get the sense that had these signs been a message he agreed with more that he would have been so offended. Hence my comment that this is a free speech issue.
My comment was meant as sarcasm. City code permits any citizen to remove any sign from the public right of way or sidewalk. That includes yard sale, campaign signs, Kool Menthol or lottery signs and even restaurant sandwich board signs.
Is that really true that you can remove signs? That is freakin awesome!!! I have work to do at some local corner stores that love to decorate the sidewalks with junk.
Hah. In a park. A public park. Maintained by evil taxes. Hah.
Just read the whole post on Reddit – looks like there was spirited debate, although perhaps not the kind one hopes for, poor mikle
Yep, here is the regulation for signs:
http://library.municode.com/index.aspx?clientId=16118
Sec. 38-115. – Removal and collection of costs.
Any violation of this division is hereby declared to be a nuisance. No person shall have any legal right to the continued presence of a sign in a public way in violation of this division, nor shall there be any legal remedy against any person solely for the removal from a public way of a sign which is in violation of this division. Any person may abate the nuisance created by a violation of this division without liability for doing so. If abatement is made by the city, the reasonable costs incurred in removal may be assessed against any person responsible for or benefited by the violation, and such costs shall be collected in the same manner as city taxes. For a willful violation, the city shall be entitled to recover costs, the reasonable value of attorney’s fees, and punitive damages in any proceeding which it may bring to enjoin future violations.
