Can you Adopt-a-Spot?

Adopt-a-Spot/Street/Gateway
We need your help! You can make Richmond cleaner and safer by adopting a street.
The Richmond Clean City Commission’s Adopt-A-Spot /Street/Gateway Program wants you to help clean up Richmond. Individuals, organizations, or businesses “adopt” a street, intersection, lot, park, gateway – most anywhere – and agree to keep the area cleared of litter for at least two years.
Just let us know what area you would like to keep clean!
We’ll give you materials to help with the cleanups. After you have completed four cleanups, you get a sign with your name on the spot. We’ll also appreciate your efforts and you’ll get mention here on the web site with our other star volunteers.
TAGGED: Clean City Commission
For at least 7 years, there has been a sign saying SISTER FRIENDS adopted part of Chimborazo Park, but no one has ever seen a Sister Friend cleaning the park.
We’ve been struggling to keep our corner clean for years. Thanks but I don’t need a sign. What I need is a trash can and some attention from the city. My repeated requests for a trash can are always denied (we are right by the Blue Wheeler and Lava Lofts and there are 2 bus stops on our block). Our sidewalk is a crumbling and dangerous mess and it’s probably one of the most used sidewalks in Church Hill – again my repeated requests for repair are denied. Good grief, help me help you.
Sleekitdogs- I live near the Blue Wheeler and I deal with the same issue due to the trash can in front of the blue wheeler and no trash can at the bus stop. I talked to the owner of the blue wheeler and I asked who was responsible for emptying the trash can and he said the city was(Thurs Pick-up). I asked him if he could please keep an eye on the over flow and he said he would. On another note I talked to GRTC and issued a request for a trash can install at the bus stop across fro the Lava Lofts. If you live near that location you should of gotten a letter in the mail from GRTC about the 21 day review.. It’s in the final review and should be accepted unless some neighbors dissaprove. Also, Ive contacted the city many times on soil removal removal on the long stretch of sidewalk by the bustop going towards 33rd. They commented that theyre not responsible for soil buildup/grass.. So Im doing the work myself and it’s looking alot better
Ocean Grocery and Blue Wheeler should do this.
Joseph and sleekitdogs. I’m on 32nd by the Blue Wheeler and would certainly volunteer my time to help in a clean up. I did not receive any mailing from GRTC however. Alex, Mrs. Alex and a couple who no longer lives on 32nd did a big clean up at the BW about a year ago and helped it look better. The neighbors were also the effort that lobbied for removal of the plywood and addition of a glass window, which I think has much improved the look of that corner.
I did get the notice earlier this week from GRTC about a trash can. I will be sincerely glad for the additional trash can, which will help with the trash. Unfortunately, I still have the sidewalk issue. We also cleared our sidewalk by hand when we first moved here 8 years ago. We live on the corner so we are responsible for across the front and down the side of our property. Our sidewalk along E Marshall is in terrible shape – it is missing huge portions of brick and has many sink holes, which make it very dangerous. We spend about $50 a month on weed killer to try to keep down the weeds and debris that we’ve already cleared away. Now that there are so many people parking on E Marshall because of the Lava Lofts, we can’t use the weed eater or blower to clear the sidewalk for fear of damaging someone’s parked car. I’ve reported the poor condition of the sidewalk and our inability to maintain it to the city and Newbille numerous times over the last 3 years. The city always denies the request for repair and Newbille never responds. The sink holes in the sidewalk fill with water and freeze in the winter, just to make it extra treacherous. We have elderly people using this sidewalk every day to get Mt. Carmel and it frustrates me that the city will not fix it. Not to mention that it looks awful. If someone falls, I have tons of documentation to share with their lawyer!!
John, I’m in again if you guys are interested.
Use a mixture of white vinegar and Epsom salt to spray on the weeds! You might have spray a few times, but it works and it is much cheaper and safer than standard weed killer! But Southern States makes a great weed killer too!! Also, you can purchase a flat square blade shovel at Lowe’s!!! You can scrape the large weeds off and then spray!!!
Where is the sidewalk exactly?? What side of the street? Drove by this morning after reading your post and couldn’t find the damage??!!!
It’s the sidewalk on the south side in the 3200 block of e Marshall. I don’t think you will be able to assess its poor condition from your car. 🙂
I live near the corner of Chimbo and Marshall and would be willing to lend a hand in the cleanup as well. I have a bus stop across from my house and the sidewalk over there could use some help too.
Joseph and Skeetkitdogs,
I drove by again and got out of the car and walked the block! Took lots of pics….I would love to help you with these issues.
I will agree with you that the sidewalk brick needs repair, however, it is not as bad as other blocks on the Hill. Take a stroll, for example, on the 400-600 block of 27th or the 2600 East Franklin. Huge, concrete slabs on East Broad are uneven with a 5 inch or more ‘rise’ that can be precarious to walk. So, if you compare your block with others, your sidewalk is in pretty good shape! This may be why you are not getting the attention you want from the City and/or Newbille.
The bus stop in the middle of the block is littered with shoes, trash and beer bottles. I am sorry you have gotten the run around about having a trashcan put out there. I have someone I can call at the City to help speed up the process on getting a trash can there. I will call today.
Also, I would like to organize a block clean up where your neighbors can come out and help spray, scrape weeds or pick up trash. The alley on 32nd St could use some TLC, too! This is a great time of the year for a clean up and we have to take advantage of these mild temperatures, right?
Please email me at stojulia_34@hotmail.com and we can work out a plan!
Look forward to hearing from you!!
I will help out with the cleanup as well.. I was thinking of putting one in for 33rd as well… My house is also on the corner of 33rd… I’ve been dealing with individuals and calling them out when I see trash thrown on the ground. I’ve even went to the nursing home on 32 and clay st to talk to the individual who’s been going through the trash in the alleyway behind the house.. I don’t understand the way people think, but it’s unacceptable, especially using the alley as a urinal… Caught two already… We need some type of organization in that area and hold blue wheeler responsible for the litter some how
Julie.. GRTC has been great with issue and after the 21-day review from the neighbors is will go to the city for the final review.. GRTC has been handling this issue very well so far, especially after showing them over 10 pics of the mess… Thank you though for calling the city though
