Hawks battle for squirrel
12/17/2013 11:53 AM by John M
Gareth sent in this great set of photos:
My dad enjoys his photography and usually gets amazing wildlife shots while on safari in South Africa. Long story short he went for coffee with my mom at Globe Hopper and saw a 2 red-tailed hawks fighting over a squirrel.
Cool pictures, really unnecessary preachy message at the end of the article.
Am I the only one that finds Alex criticizing something/someone as “unnecessary” and “preachy” a bit freakin’ hilarious? I’m just sayin:) I almost spit my beer on my keyboard.
Hmmmm, I guess this was necessary at the end of the article:
“And off they flew over the high rise buildings; the ‘have’ fleeing the ‘have not’.
While not so openly evident, the tense dynamic between ‘those that have’ and those that are in desperate need, also exists with humans. In the USA, for example, statistics show that the few rich are getting richer, while the many poor are getting poorer. And of concern is that the gap is widening as time unfolds.”
Not.
These were beautiful, I loved seeing them so thanks for sharing. I disagree with this statement, though, “This was such an unusual sight in the middle of an urban context of a city, where wild life seldom ventures”.
I’ve seen flying squirrels, bats, moles, voles, skunks, groundhogs, possums and raccoons right here in the neighborhood. Multitudes of hawks and ospreys downtown, eagles on the Willy Bridge, deer, and don’t we get a bear in Carytown every now and then?
This is a great series of photos, thank you for sharing! I second katzenjaamer’s comment, though: it’s not at all unusual to see wildlife in Richmond, and I see birds of prey all the time. I haven’t seen any bears in Carytown, though, so I’m keeping my eyes peeled from now on.
Gotta agree with Alex on this one. Loved seeing the pictures but when it turned political (as most discussions do these days) it turned me off. Kudos to the photographer though-what a great set of photographs!
And foxes. I forgot foxes. I’ve seen them in the ravine behind Tricycle Gardens (where the sinkhole was)
