Then and now on Cedar Street

Then and now for 2228 Cedar Street, though in 1965 that stretch was still listed as N Street.
Older photo and information from the Richmond Esthetic Survey at the Library of Virginia, an repository of maps, photographs, and detailed written survey reports documenting the architecture of central Richmond, Virginia, in 1965.
Unfortunately Cedar Street Baptist had those homes facing 23rd Street torn down for more parking about a year before we moved to the neighborhood and maybe 3 years before the Old and Historic District came into being.
The rule of thumb in the neighborhood is the larger the home, the more likely to be demolished. Many of the grander homes were torn down throughout the 70s, 80s, and 90s.
I’m still upset that the church in the name of vanity changed THREE streets’ names all because its Cedar Street no longer existed. They could have left N. 19th and Pleasants Streets alone and just renamed that block only. You don’t see Fifth Street Baptist Church renaming 3rd Avenue.
The house that is still standing would make a great renovation. That corner has a good sense of place notwithstanding the shoddy Cedar Street Baptist parking lot. I think the gnarled old paper mulberry in the “before” picture is still there, which makes me think that tree may be a rare survivor from a 19th century garden. The “before” picture has a great peek at the future Metzger building, too.
