What is the future of the Family Market?
04/23/2014 6:15 AM by John M
It’s been just over a year since the Family Market (aka “SHRIMP”) was suddenly closed and condemned. As of last August, the owner of the building was uncertain whether or not the building was going to be demolished or fixed up.
A building permit was issued in February 2014, for $35,000 worth of work “Rebuilding Floor Of Building To Drawings”, with the building use to continue as “M1 – Retail Convenience”.
I love this building and the way it sits on the street. With some work, it could be a really attractive part of the neighborhood and a great home for a shop. I hope it makes it.
I second the previous comment. Though, it would also be nice if they would do something with the empty lot around it! Any news on that front?
I live close and used to go here often. There have been work crews there off and on. It seems as though they are trying to stabilize the building. There was talk before that they were going to knock it down and build still more condos – but it doesn’t appear to be the case. Maybe some apartments mixed with a bit of retail. Some new exciting possibilities with more businesses. Let the Church Hi renaissance continue!
Shrimpburger, gone but not forgotten.
PERFECT SITE FOR A 16 STORY CONDO !!!
It will increase the RVA”s economic and tax base, (same rational as Stadium, Pear St.,& Echo Harbour).
SUP forthcoming for this, WINNER IDEA, as it’s all about: “change and progress”.
Tear it down and salt the earth.
Brilliant, #5!
And while we’re at it, let’s build a 16 story tower condos at Libby and Grove (Baliles would love that), another on Monument at the Lee statue for Samuels, one in Ginter Park for Hilbert, a 25 story tower in Forest Hills Park for the champion of any development Graziano (hey, more customers for the Farmers Market!), another next to the Carillion for Agelasto and others next door to the other council members (wherever they may really live… wink wink Dr. N)
