Collegiate Road National Championships at Libby Hill
Word beforehand was that Libby Hill would be a great place to see the Collegiate Road National Championships today. That was true, but had it all backwards: the race today was a great reason to hang out at Libby Hill.
Folks from across the neighborhood as well as spectators from close and far away have gathered at Richmond’s most beautiful park for what amounts to 5 minutes of acton every 25 minutes or so. It’s perfect.
There are still a good 5 or more hours left of race time if you haven’t been over yet. Plenty of dogs and babies, and great views for all.

For those who may be wondering, the proposed Pear Street building would almost as high as the Lucky Stripe tower (first picture and others).
Please write ALL the City Council members and attend the Monday, May 27 meeting at 6:00 PM at City Hall and OPPOSE the proposed Pear Street monstrosity.
Cute baby, John. Not so sure about the father!
I like the height of the Lucky Strike tower. I also like the height of the proposed building, as well as many of its other qualities. I hope the building is approved. Now that the planning commission has recommended approval, that seems more likely.
More on topic, the race day looks like it was fun. I wish I could have gone.
Ray,
Thank you for the comment.
You have the correct date (the 27th) but it’s a Tuesday (The Monday is Memorial Day)

I thought all the petition signs/tables/people etc were an unnecessary distraction from a great cycling event. Build baby build!!!
The spurts of bike races were a thrill, but the conversations with neighbors and visitors were a delightful constant. If Dave thought the people were a distraction, try a skyscraper in your face – not to mention the building process. Beautiful day!

What the heck is the “Concept of Richmond”?
I enjoyed the race from Libby Hill. Too bad they didn’t go around the statue. That would have made it very exciting.
I concur with # 5. I didn’t really need to see the posters….especially the ones that were stapled to the trees. Well, the tree was blocking part of the panoramic view, so maybe that was the plan.
Agree. I hope they took those posters down when the event was over. I thought it tacky to put them up in the first place.
@ Houdon – On May 24, 1607, ten days after landing at Jamestown, English settlers led by Christopher Newport came up the James River, but were met by the falls of the James. While our community of Richmond was not started that day and was not called Richmond until 1737, Richmond Day celebrates that May 24, 1607 was the date that our community of Richmond was first conceived in the mind of the English settlers. Richmond Day was first celebrated on May 24, 2007 as a part of the 400th Anniversary of Jamestown and commemorated that on that day, 400 years previous, the concept of our community, now named Richmond, was first considered.
William Byrd said of drawing up Richmond, “Not only did we build castles in the air but also cities.” 180RVA continues the tradition of drawing nonsense in the air.
“180RVA continues the tradition of drawing nonsense in the air.” That makes no sense. :-/
I hope folks will come to Richmond Day in Libby Hill Park on Saturday May 24, evaluate the panorama view of the James and perhaps rethink what a high rise would mean, particularly vis a vis establishing a precedent for more of them downriver toward the bend that named the city.
Yes it would be nice to have people come up here and take a look at the panorama. A field trip for Council Members before the meeting would seem to be appropriate. Invite them:
