Friends of Chimborazo meeting set, gauging interest in food truck for movie night
Friends of Chimborazo will hold its monthly meeting at the Chimborazo Park House, Saturday June 7 at 10:00 AM:
We plan to discuss issues relevant to both the Dog Park and the remainder of the park including park improvements, fundraising, and movie nights.
In addition, Friends of Chimborazo has raised the money required to show The Blues Brother in the Chimborazo Park June 21 and will be paying the licensing fees once all checks are received.
The group has reached out to food trucks and are negotiating with one to come out and vend that evening prior to the movie:
In order to make the food truck happen, Friends of Chimborazo has to guarantee $250 in sales or make up the difference between actual sales and that amount.
The plan is to play Blues Brothers type fun music for at least an hour before the event so as to create a picnic type atmosphere. Before we commit to this plan, we would like to judge community interest.
Right now it is an empanada truck we are negotiating with, and would do different trucks at future events.
Finally, we want to warn people that The Blues Brothers is rated “R” because of language consisting mainly of about a dozen uses of the F-bomb and other lesser swear words. I watched it recently and noted that there is no graphic violence or nudity or any sort.
The movie sounds great! I’ll probably not buy any food from the food truck but I hope other people will.
I hate to be rude, but I need more “Yes I would buy food ” or “No, it does nothing for me” in order to decide if I should engage this vendor to sell empanadas. There is a financial obligation we have to meet if they dont make $250 in sales.
A 250 minimum seems high to me. I used to work as an ice cream vendor I do not ever remember requiring a minimum sales to do an event. I think the minimum sales requirement should be dropped.
Don’t do it…
Would’t it be more logical bring a grill, cook hot dogs and hamburgers and drinks. Charge like 5 bucks for a hot dog, hamburger and a can soda? I sure that would clear 2-3 bucks to help with revenue towards the next movie? Or shoot everyone order from Alamo and have it delivered.
I would hate to have some people make up the difference in sales in something that isn’t definite. Also, what if the weather forcast changes? Still have to fess up the 250?
I think the cookout idea sounds great! The smell of burgers and hot dogs cooking would certainly entice folks to buy.
@4, edg, when did you work as an ice cream vendor, and what is your basis for thinking the minimum requirement should be dropped? That’s up to the vendor, not up to the neighbors. There are probably other places they could take their truck, so they logically want to know if they will have any sales.
@3, Chimbo, obviously you are not getting any good responses. I’m not planning to go the movie, but I do think that #6 has a point, sort of….if you want to go to that trouble to get a grill. The problem is, if the weather goes bad then you are stuck with a bunch of hot dogs and burgers and no money to pay you back…..
@6, do you every RSVP to a dinner party or wedding or other event that you are invited to? ‘Cause that seems to be what is happening here… asking for something of an RSVP. I really don’t think the vendor’s request is outrageous. It’s a Saturday night, they could probably find plenty of other events to take their truck to, and they want to have some idea if it is worthwhile to turn down other events.
Actually, I have checked with some event organizers and they say a minimum sales requirement is pretty standard with food trucks. This is how the cover the prep time and the potential for food going to waste.
There are numerous reasons why we cant cook the food including vending permits and park regulations concerning grills.
I do appreciate all of the sincere feedback.
@10 FYI…permanent grills were just installed at Chimborazo Playground. No so sure the park prohibits them…
I have always been told by high level park people that any sort of fire is forbidden in the parks. But thanks.
That would make sense (no fire) because it is a federal park….. Vs. Chimbo playground is city run, I believe?
Also, just curious, I was not able to attend the last Movie, but what was the turnout like? What about charging a movie entry fee to help pay for the rights to the movie?
Turn out was low because it was a niche movie and the advertising I was expecting from the bike races didnt come through. 25 to 30 people.
Our license to show the movie forbids us to collect a fee or ask for donations. Though if they are offered, they can be accepted.
The same goes with the selling of food. Parks and Rec does not want any form of commerical transaction except those conducted by licensed vendors.
@13 The larger Chimborazo Park is also run by the city… The Federal gov’t land is only the parcel immediately surrounding the Medical Museum and bounded by the roadways:-) The movies are shown on City property.
@Chimbo
Im confused, I thought these movies were paid for by donations? or does it have to be a prior arrangement and a donation from a company?
I doubt you would be able to meet the minimum. I did attend the last movie, and I thought it was great, but it was a pretty small turnout.
Sorry, We can not solicit donations on site at the time of the screening or then it becomes a commercial event and…
Yes, I will buy food at the food truck.
