No one has been shot to death in the East End this year
Just over 5 months in and here is perhaps the oddity of the year so far: no one has been shot to death in the East End in 2014 .
Only 1 of the 19 killings in Richmond so far in 2014 has come in the East End, when 44-year-old Ronnie S. Cook stabbed his mother to death in early January.
Lt.Blackwell’s most recent Sector 113 report says that violent crime in that sector is down 50% from last year, listing 30 incidents through the end of April (compared to 60 through April in 2013). Sector 113 is the area north of Carrington Street and Nine Mile Road, and includes Mosby, Fairfield, Creighton, and Whitcomb Courts, and saw 8 of the 10 murders in the East End last year.
Last year at this time there had been 5 killings in the East End. There were 10 killings total in the East End in 2013, in 8 of which the victims were shot to death.
Like this year, 2012 also seen only 1 homicide through the end of May. The final count was 9, 8 of which were shootings.
The only other year to see as few as 9 killings in the area was 2009, which saw 7 killings through June 2 but only 2 the rest of the year. Like 2012, 8 of the 9 killings were shootings.

Local News leads off ANY & ALL shooting stories for *our area* with: “ANOTHER shooting in Church Hill tonight (today, etc.) …!”. It really doesn’t even seem to matter whether the crime actually even occured in Church Hill.
They probably always will use this canned script, and therefore recklessly perpetuate the myth that violent crime is a daily norm for us. Meanwhile, the homicides (& other crime) go on elsewhere in area’s considered ‘safe” or “low crime” (Ouch,-Counties).
Sigh…grumble.
At the problem solving workshop I talked with some ladies from Fairfield and Creighton who were extremly frustrated about nobody coming forward with information about the shooters in their neighborhood. They acknowledged that there was a fear factor of retaliation but also acknowledged that enough was enough. A six year old boy and a one year old girl are the latest victims.
The scum that would shoot a child, or shoot a weapon where children are in the line of fire needs to be taken off the street.
Come on, It is everyone’s responsibility to make a safe place to live and you can report information without revealing YOUR idenity.
Years ago when a known drug dealer was working out of 2816 East Grace St. I was cautioned by the police that these people had police scanners and knew who was calling the police. My response was , “GOOD, I want them to KNOW they are being watched, recorded, license plates and discriptions of customers recorded and reported”.
Don’t sigh and grumble, call the police!
Great news that fatal shootings are down. Any data out there on how many shootings in the east end this year that did not result in a death. Homicide stats are quite misleading sometimes. Just cause people ain’t dying doesn’t mean they ain’t getting shot. P St., Creighton Rd.,Coalter St. x 2, N. 20th St. Ambrose St. (5 year old), N. 29th St. And that’s just off the top of my head for 2014…..
Pretty remarkable. Not sure who should get the credit. Surely the RPD and in no small measure the urban pioneers who moved into the neighborhood and helped tame it. Congratulations.
If we reform our drug laws we could cut the heart our of violent and non violent crime in the city and cut down on the prison population. No one stands to benefit more than the people who are marooned in these high crime neighborhoods. I bet school scores would even improve. Here’s hoping.
Good question. I remember seeing somewhere that it was down, but I can’t find the link. I’ve asked the RPD, I’ll post back here when I get the numbers.
I looked at this before for the years 2000-2012. There was a definite decrease in the number of shootings from 2004. It seemed then there was a killing for every 2nd or 3rd shooting.

As of today:

* 3 people have been shot in Sector 111 (Fulton, Church Hill North, Chimborazo, Oakwood, St.John’s, Union Hill)
* 7 people have been shot in Sector 113 (Mosby, Fairfield, Creighton, Whitcomb Courts, Fairmount, Brauer’s, Woodville)

Is Nelson St. in Sector 111 because a man got shot on Nelson St. Jan. 14th. That would make 4 people shot in Sector 111 including a child.
Also on the RPD Crime Incident Info Center it shows an additional 3 aggravated assaults where a firearm was the weapon. These I was not aware of.
Bethel St. Jan 5th, N. 22nd Jan. 19th, Accommodation on May 5th. But its not clear if these were shootings or “pistol whippings”
Interesting… Nelson Street is 111.
