Man shot to death on 21st Street
06/24/2014 6:49 PM by John M
Wtvr6 is reporting a fatal shooting in the 800 block of 21st Street:
There was a call made for random gunfire at 5:26 p.m., in the 700 block of Mosby. When police arrived they found an adult, black male dead in the alley on N. 21st between Venable and Carrington streets, Lt. Daniel Minton confirmed.
This is only the 2nd killing in the East End in 2014; at this time last year there had been five.
Tomorrow (Wednesday) would have marked 6 months since the last gun death up here, when Adam Jamal El was killed in Fulton on December 25 in Fulton.
WOWi in broad daylight!!
How about this. My wife called the RPD at 12:00 noon and reported drug dealing in the vacant lot next to Mosby Mart. We had just been made aware TODAY that drug dealing was taking place in the vacant lot next to Mosby Mart by a neighbor. Asked him how long and he said about two -three weeks. They start at 6am and go all day. Ask him if he notified police he said no. We could see all the vehicles stopping and people walking in the alley, definitely selling drugs!
My wife called police at noon or shortly thereafter and ask for police presence in alley. They said they would send out a cruiser. Three hours later, no cruiser. I prepare to send letter to Police headquarters and Mayors office then 8 boom, boom booms. Look out window see fellows running all over. Call Police , lots of response but too late bad guys are gone, one guy is dead.
We check video, bad guys pull up to stop sign at 21st St at Venable, two police cruisers speed by on Venable, bad guys calmly drive down 21st Street right behind them, no joke. Bye Bye bad boys. Police drove right in front of them by no more than three seconds (video don’t lie). The bad guys were sitting right at the stop sign as the police sped by on their way to someplace without stopping at stop sign. Wow!
The Union Hill Civic Association was harangued for opposing an ABC license at Mosby Mart. Imagine how much more of a $#!t hole that place would be if they could also sell booze.
I found the body and others present called 911. We also gave a description of the kids in the car AND a plate #. Try and help the neighborhood and stop the whining about the police.
Oh and anonymous potshot second guessing is a true measure of a sad individual too gutless to engage neighbors in a real conversation. Yeah, its gotta be the ABC license brouhaha that caused this situation……talk about an overly inflated sense of selfimportance! An anonymous jerk pontificating once again.
Murden, how do you stand this posturing from these blowhards ?
I thank everyone who posts under their real name. The time for anonymous hateful comments is way gone. Either post under your actual identity or be prepared to be relegated to the “Who cares what a coward says ” pile…..
From the RPD:
North 21st Street Homicide
Richmond Police detectives are in the early stages of a homicide investigation in the East End and have identified the victim as Jay Q. Wood, 47, of the 3100 block of Zion Street.
At approximately 5:26 p.m. Tuesday, officers were called to the 800 block of North 21st Street for a report of random gunfire. They arrived on scene within minutes and found Wood suffering from gunshot wounds. He died at the scene.
Detectives are following up on several strong leads, but still ask anyone with any information about this crime to call Crime Stoppers at 780-1000. Citizens can also text Crime Stoppers at 274637, using the key word “ITip” followed by your tip. Both Crime Stoppers methods are anonymous.
@2 James T, please contact Lt. Minton at the number he listed in his post #9.
Thanks for the good work, RPD.
Calling Lt Minton now!
Wife says 911 call closer to 1-2pm. Regardless of time police did not respond to our initial 911 call to investigate suspicious activity in field next to Mosby Mart.. Our second call was “shots are being fired now” as I was on phone with the 911 operator.
None of this is being written in an attempt to embarrass or put down RPD, they are a fine group of officers and in the past they have been very responsive to our calls.
When we made the initial call to the 911 operator we asked if there was another number we should call to discuss the people in the open lot. The 911 operator said they would send a cruiser out to check out the situation.
While some may think saving a man’s life is unimportant, I disagree and still feel that had RPD sent a cruiser through that alley within an hour or two of our initial call that man’s life may have been spared. Every worthwhile organization seeks to improve. My statements are not meant to put down or embarrass, I just do not ever wish to see another man lose his life if it can be avoided.
I heard yesterday from what I consider a reliable source that the man in question who was murdered was in the commission of robbing another individual for drugs or money and was shot… Apparently there was a second individual who was shot but was able to flee… This is speculation not fact but I felt it was worthy enough to be entered into conversation….
If you are sensitive about using 911 for non life threatening calls, you can use their non emergency number which is 804-646-5100. I think they both wind up going through the same call center.
