Metzger’s Bar and Butchery opens Wednesday on 23rd Street
Partners Brad Hemp, Nathan Conway, and Brittanny Anderson’s eagerly anticipated Metzger’s Bar and Butchery opens Wednesday at 23rd and Cedar Streets in the heart of Union Hill.
A smallish (40 seats?) corner restaurant, the simple room is defined by an open front window, a wall of gleaming white subway tile, and a rustic single-piece bar by Henry Kettlewell. There is a deli case at the front, and the back wall is anchored by a pair of paintings by Mark Tyburski.
Metzger’s website says that they will “serve ethically raised and hormone-free meats and sausages, European focused wine and beer, and modern German cuisine.” Their snacks/apps/entrees menu (below) runs $3-19 with the anticipated pork, sausage, and sauerkraut, but also a surprising number of vegetarian and pescatarian options.
The European-heavy wine list is very accessible, with glasses priced at $5-7 and bottles at $18-38. “We priced our wines aggressively,” says Anderson, “We want people to drink wine the same way that they drink beer.”
In addition to being a full service restaurant and wine/beer bar, the space also houses a retail wine and butcher shop. Sausage Craft sausages, housemade terrines, pates, and pickles are some of the items available for purchase.
Metzger’s will be open Tuesday-Sunday, with retail opening at 11:00 AM and dinner service starting at 5:00 PM.

We are so pleased that you have chosen to be in Church Hill. We wish you all success and we will certainly be clients.
Bravo and the best of luck!
Welcome to our neighborhood. Wonderful addition to Union Hill. Church Hill, eat your heart out!
Wunderbar! I don’t get to have spaetzel very often so that will be a treat for me.
Viel Erfolg!
As ***THE GREAT*** Cleavon Little said in Blazing Saddles: “Fifteen is my limit on schnitzengruben.”
We stumbled in on Sat nite not knowing it was friends/family nite till we were well into our apps & drinks. Enjoyed some of the best raw oysters I’ve ever slurped– with Brittany’s special mignonette. Lots of fish and veggie options along with meats. The chef’s attention to detail is stunning. We pigged out. Homemade cheese cake was very special. Can’t wait to go back for more!
