I see the red roof house at 1513 Mechanicsville Tpk on there but wasn’t it already slated for demolition a while back?
The house at 413 N 27th should be in limbo. The owner is no longer legally allowed to live there. It was never finished being renovated after a major fire 2-years ago including having no kitchen and no bathrooms. The contractor (Walker & Frick) has a mechanic’s lien on it and I am sure the bank (Bank of America) should be foreclosing soon – just in procedures.
Someone else already mentioned this, but aren’t some of these slated to be demolished? Maybe, they can be saved through a tax sale, rather than torn down?
Lee… the key or at least what is being tossed about is that the houses that are being demolished are in immanent danger of falling down or a public hazard. Problem is that some of these houses don’t look like they will fall in anytime soon and sit well away from streets and sidewalks so who are they putting in danger?
Tax sales are when there are back taxes owed and haven’t been paid upwards to several years. Oddly some of these buildings could possibly have taxes paid up automatically by estates who family members live out of town or state and not maintaining them.
Clarify that these listed are not having taxes paid but some of these abandoned houses around town could.
It’s bittersweet to see the vacant lots at 606/608 North 29th Street go up for auction. It would be great to see a new house go up. However, it’s sad to see the gorilla flower/vegetable garden I’ve been working on for 4 years be removed.
@Eric…I get the distinction. What I’m saying is maybe the city should do more to save houses that are likely to be seized for tax reasons, focus on getting at risk properties through the tax sale process faster/first, or otherwise work to better coordinate the respective departments doing condemnations, demolitions, and tax sales – with the goal of minimizing the number of homes that the city demolishes. But I realize this may not be practical…
Speaking of 413 N. 27th does anyone know what happened to the lady who used to live there? I know there’s a whole lot of backstory here…but I always thought N was a nice person, and wish her well.
