CrossFit Prelude coming to Marshall Street in August
CrossFit Prelude will be opening its doors the first week in August at 3306 East Marshall Street (a half block away from Urban Farmhouse).
CrossFit Prelude’s owners Julie Murray and Larris Hutton say the facility will emphasis members over membership numbers.
“Our classes will be much smaller than what you see with other group exercise programs. Our classes are capped at 8 members… Additionally, our goal is not to pack members in our facility, thus, our overall membership base will be capped. We found that this approach allows our coaches to dedicate a substantial amount of time […] to the holistic development of our members.”
Current and former Army officers, Larris and Julie look forward to leading the charge to make Church Hill a fitter, healthier community.
“We live in Church Hill, and have a vested interest in Church Hill’s growth,” Murray and Hutton explain, “So you can expect to see us doing a lot of community oriented activities outside of the gym.”

Welcome to the neighborhood! I live on this block and am excited to see those buildings get used for something productive
Excellent news. Thank you Larris & Julie for opening your business in Church Hill. Very exciting for our neighbors working out with your encouragement and strength. Bring it!
Cross fit is not my thing, not really a fan of that culture, but as neighbors I wish these guys nothing but success. Best of luck!
Isn’t there a CrossFit at 17th and Broad?
#7–I was told that it moved, where I don’t know.
The crossfit at 17th and Broad moved slightly around the corner about 2 blocks off Main and 19th but dont quote me on exact location.
Larris and Julie Thank you for your Service.
I’m an Army Veteran and am so glad you guys are investing in the Neighborhood that I can most certainly assure you I’ll be patronizing this establishment.
Is there a website?
What will pricing be? Most Crossfits require you sign up for a year long contract : – / Im hoping you guys do something more like a 3-6-9-12month thing … As a crossfitter it can be very tough on your body 12 months in a row.
Also Military and Student discount 5-10% at least intitially ?
Two of my best friends own Crossfit gyms. I have been hoping one would pop up in Church Hill for a while!
Very nice!!!!
Neighbors 2. Yes there is another CrossFit Gym in Shockoe Bottom, however, you will find that our approach and methods differ. We would be more than happy to discuss with you once we get up and running.
Jay B. Our website will be active later on this week. All of the details will be posted. And of course discounts will be available for students, first responders, and military.
I have a lot of friends that do CrossFit and love it. I’ve thought about it before but it’s a little indimidating. In all honesty I don’t drink enough water or exercise regularly…and smoke a pack a day…my concern is that I would die.
is there a lot of cussing there?
Mindy. You’re concerns are similar to what others have had. Our program is different than others in the area, and we do a couple of things to reduce overall risks, and provide the best environment in which to train.
First, in order to ensure you have the best learning experience, our classes are capped at 8 students. Our goal is not to pack a class full of students, but to provide quality service to our members where they can progress along a continuum, at their own pace, which leads them to their desired level of fitness, and reduces the chance of injury.
Second, we don’t increase the intensity of the workouts unilaterally, and we want you to demonstrate consistent mechanically correct form before you move forward. This is another check on taking you from little to no exercise, to realizing your goals. A rapid progression is what causes injury.
Third, I’m a nurse. So if you die, I will bring you back to life (well I think if I could do that then I would be a higher power as opposed to a nurse….but hey).
