@Gunther – or maybe it does a little of both? At the very least, it produces new tax revenue which can be used for social programs to help eliminate squalor.
…Or maybe they’re just not fully “hooked on phonics”?!
…Or quite possibly, half way through, they had a change of heart – “Gentrification, not so bad, eh?” So they abruptly ended their act of vandalism and said a quick prayer – wishing that an awesome pastry shop & a kick-ass restaurant would amazingly appear…
It would be hard to call it gentrification in this particular block. Most of the houses in the block were owned by 2 slumlords. “4 Corners Charlie” and Stan Smith. Both had numerous code citations for these houses.
When I bought my house on that block in the mid-80’s, half the houses were vacant and uninhabitable. The rest were rented by the room.
The gray house in the background was the scene of a murder suicide the day my wife moved in to live with me. Then there was a Tech 9 gunfight on the same block.
Crack babies wandered the street in diapers at 3 AM as Mom was sucking on a pipe. Rats were the size of cats.
The reality is, these two slumlords sucked the life out of the houses and the neighborhood.
@8 the picture is dated 2007, it is not from back in the day. And the crack babies wandering the streets at 3 a.m. is a bit much. I remember the slumlords, but they’re gone now and have been for some time. 27th Street has been a good street for quite awhile now.
I bought some really awesome blueberry muffins today on this block….from WPA Bakery. Plenty of life on that block, now. And the blueberries in those muffins were gigantic.
Agreed crd. Those days are long gone. My point was that the block was in horrid condition in the 80’s and to say people were displaced by gentrification is incorrect. They were already gone or dead.
The only one I know that left involuntarily was Mrs. Johnson. She complained to the City about her apartment and Johnson evicted her. I helped Bobby with his rent for Stan numerous times by hiring him to do odd labor for me.

Also, it looks like they might have been worried they were going to run out of space!

God acts in mysterious ways.
I think he/she couldn’t figure out how to spell it.
