Recognize this cat?
11/17/2014 7:23 AM by John M
This cat has been roaming around my block for the past three days. Not sure if it belongs to anyone but he/she is VERY friendly and is in need of a warm home.
Seen around Union Market on Jefferson between 23rd and 24th streets. Anyone know if this cat belongs to someone? Doesn’t have a collar.
I remember this cat. It seems to be a resident of the block of 24th st South of Jefferson. It had a collar at one point – I believe it’s name was Julius?
His owner moved away and abandoned him. I work at metzger. He hangs around there a lot. There’s a lady who feeds him apparently. I feed him whenever I see him as well. I think he’s declawed, which means he shouldn’t be outdoors in the first place, and as mentioned above he’s VERY friendly, even to strangers. That worries me a bit because we all know not everyone in the neighborhood likes cats.
He deserves a loving home.
This is Cassius. His family abandoned him about 6 months ago and used to live on that block, hence why he hangs around there. He used to have a collar but nobody answers the number that was on it. I have tried bringing him home, but my girls didn’t like him at all. He really is a very sweet and loving cat and desperately needs a home away from the cold. He is currently living in sewers and under porches on 24th…I wish I could do more for him.
I think his name is Chester
Cassius, that’s it. He’s really cool.
A friend of mine is the one who feeds him and got him a flea collar during the summer bc he was wasting away with them. She can’t have cats though in her rental, but does have a heart. I would love to see him in a forever home.
Wait, that’s Cassius and he’s my next-door neighbor’s cat (at 24th and Leigh) … he’s always been allowed to roam…I didn’t realize Jesse had moved but will check.
He has been hanging around Union Market for about a month now. He is a very awesome cat. Someone should scoop him up.
And I call him sneakers thinks it fits him better
That’s definitely Cassius, and he definitely has an owner on 24th St. He’s a great cat, but goes crazy if he’s inside too much. He’s not abandoned. He doesn’t live in porches/sewers. He’s his own man.
Cassius is/was my cat. Yes, I live on 24th, but he refuses to come in. I can’t take care of him if he won’t come home. So no, he’s not abandoned, he just does his own thing. I’ve put several collars on him but they always come off. I’m happy to take him back but he doesn’t show up to my house anymore. A cat of the people.
He’s pretty much the best cat ever, except he hates being inside.
I also saw this cat over the weekend (on 23rd and Leigh St). He/she was incredibly friendly and came running over to say hello. Very much in need of a flea bath and some grooming. Poor thing! I worry about him being left out in these freezing cold temperatures.
@17–Cassius IS a great cat. But, he’d probably like his own cat door–so he can come and go on his schedule.
Here’s how to add a cat door to your home without cutting a hole in your door/window. This is super easy to remove when your lease is up/you move out.
1. Buy a basic cat door/cat flap that’s in a plastic frame.
2. Measure the inside sill width of a window that Cassius can jump to.
4. at Lowes, have em cut a 1″ thick piece of plywood that’s as wide as your window and 4-6 inches taller than the cat door.
5. Buy/borrow a cheap jig saw and cut a snug opening for the cat door in the board. Centering the height of the cat door (a couple inches of wood above and below the plastic frame.)
6. Fit the cat door into the opening, and run a bead of caulk around the edge where the cat door meets the wood.
7. Raise the lower sash in your window and fit board w/ cat door into the sill and pull sash down to meet it.
8. Get a couple 2″ wood or metal screws and screw em into the inside of the track above your sash–or thru the lower sash into the upper sash so the window can’t be opened from outside.
9. Add some adhesive backed insulation tape around the cat-door-board where it meets the window sash/track.
Voila! A removable cat door when your lease is up/you sell the house.
*If you want it too look fancy/hold up for a few years, prime and paint the board before you install it in the window.
If this is someones cat and they are taking ownership of it, rather than letting someone who wants him have him, then maybe they should take care of him. It sounds as if @15/16/17 claims ownership, but is neglecting him completely. If the owner truly cared about the cat then the cat wouldn’t have fleas, and not be begging at others doors. I get that he LOVES the outdoors, but to own a cat (indoor or out) requires responsibility, and if you can’t/won’t be responsible, then you should relinquish your rights to the animal for someone who wants it. It sounds as if many of the local neighbors adore the cat, maybe one of them should officially adopt him since the owner isn’t properly caring for him. Just because he is an outdoor cat doesn’t mean he should have fleas or not have enough food. I’ve seen this cat before looking emaciated and called RACC (in the summer) to catch him before because I thought he had no owner. You can tell an owned outdoor cat and a non-owned one. If he has an owner then that owner is being super neglectful. You can get oral flea meds at the Animal Hospital for like $15 a month if he doesn’t like collars. PLEASE take care of your cat or let someone else adopt him and at least get him healthy.
