Can you volunteer to help keep the litter picked up on one block until September?
It’s simple: choose your block and put you on the map.

The UCI World Championships bicycle races will be in Richmond from September 19-27, 2015. Building on Rick Tatnall’s idea that “Company is Coming”, I’m offering up My Block both as a way to help get our city looking good before the 400,000 visitors show up, and, longer term, to increase neighborhood ties by strengthening community bonds at the block level and to encourage citizen ownership of their environment.
- The goal is to get an individual or group to adopt a block, and promise to keep it clean for the next 7 months.
- This will lead to new interactions between neighbors, and build habits and connections that will last after the bike races have come and gone.
- We hope to build community capacity and interest for other low-level volunteer projects in the area.

Ooooo, my own trash pick up stick?? Cool! SOLD!!
Awesome idea, thank you John for helping to coordinate this effort!
I pick up trash all the time. I don’t mind, it’s better than looking at it laying around. However if I ever catch the guy who throws his disgusting dental floss pick on my sidewalk every day, I will choke him with my own two hands.
Per a suggestion: the parks and any other mappable spaces are available to claim, too.
Great initiative! I’d be happy to help out.
I took my block but I’d also like to do something for the 3100 block of E Marshall. It’s one of the worst blocks in regards of trash (see picture above :(. It’s more than I think I could do on my own. Anyone willing to partner with me on that stretch?
Why do this for one event? Some of us do this everyday & will continue to do so. I’ll sign up for my block so people can contact me if they need to but can’t people agree to do this for more than the event? It’s really easy to carry a bag while I walk my dogs.
Mary Anne – for sure, that’s the goal… I set it to expire for a few reasons.
The idea of setting a shorter term of promise makes it more easily approachable to people.
It also gives us a great time to stop and consider an idea of whether or not this works as project, and think about what would be next.
If it has an impact and we do keep going, having a reset period gives us a specific time to publicise the effort.
Also, if this does work, having a set time goes me the change to work on the technology and supplies behind the project. I already had people from the Fan and Museum District want to sign up, but had to turn them away because this does’t scale yet.
Good points. Is this open to people who don’t read your blog? I know some residents of The Bowler Home on 2500 block of Leigh & residents of Church Hill House that might pitch in but I don’t want to invite them if communicating & keeping tabs on them would be too difficult.
Nah, that’s a great idea. If you can be the contact, get their info and sign’em up!
Sure thing!
22 volunteers in the first 24 hours. Y’all are so awesome.
I’ve gotten pickup sticks out to about half of the folks so far, will get to the rest of you tomorrow I hope.
Happy to help as well John. I think the picker- upper is great too. I usually have my one hand inside a plastic bag to place the trash in another bag. I live on a corner and it was pretty littered. Since I’ve picked it up, it has stayed mostly un-littered.
I watch people walk down the street on a regular basis and openly throw trash on the ground or down the storm drain; somtimes when a trash can is right next to them. The trash will keep coming, so you folks will have plenty of time to bond.
Response to this has been phenomenal. A *ton*of signups came in overnight (look at the map!), I’ll be getting pickup sticks out to everyone of the course of the week.
Okay, folks I’ve given out all of the 1st round of pickup sticks. I should be getting a nice load in this Friday from the Clean City Commission. SO… if you’ve already signed up and you haven’t yet gotten your stick look for it this weekend. If you haven’t signed up yet, get crackin’ and get on the list for the next batch of pickup sticks!

Cant remember the last time i was so stoked about getting a stick! Mine arrived today…
Have not gotten mine yet, but have gotten a couple of neighbors stoked about the idea, which is good.
Almost made it to you today, crd. Tomorrow for sure!
Okay! Thanks! I can pick up if you want, though
Hey John, did you get my sign-up?
@Liz – I seem to have missed it. Can you email me directly at murden@gmail.com with your selected block & your address? Thanks for following up!
You know whats frustraiting? Picking up the trash on the whole block, and then driving by 10 minutes later and watching someone push all their trash out of their car right back onto the street/curb.
On my block there is a section of apartments, this is the area with the main issue. Everytime I come back there is more trash. There is more on this 3rd of the block than all four sides of the whole block, on both sides of the street.
First night out with my pickup stick and a woman at the light rolled her window down and thanked me. Nice. Same result – 3/4 bag of trash and tons of recycling. Catchup from curbs full of snow!
