Great turn out yesterday for East End Community Activist & Advocate Convention
A number of ideas and initiatives were introduced Saturday, including one called “My Block,” where individuals or groups adopt one street block and work to keep it clean for seven months leading up to the UCI Road World Championships coming to Richmond in September, as well as after the cycling competition leaves town.
Another program, the ER2 Project, encourages communities to help one another with fire and emergency prevention by taking more responsibility as citizens for their neighbors’ health and welfare.
Yet another idea was E3, or the East End Exchange, otherwise known as a time bank. Such a program involves people who volunteer their time to help their neighbors in a variety of ways — babysitting, housecleaning, medical advocacy, transportation, music lessons and more — and in return, they receive time credits. Then, when they need something, they use their time credits to request help from others.
The time bank system establishes a community of people who care about one another, said Kathy Kildea and Joanie Freeman, representatives of the Cville TimeBank in Charlottesville.
Rick, this was a great event. I’ve never been in a better room of people.
Rick is to be both congratulated and thanked – Having the vision and then putting it all together was a huge task. The whole East End community will benefit from his effort
Rick, thank you for putting together this wonderful event. I thoroughly enjoyed learning about all the great ideas and initiatives, and having the opportunity to meet fellow East Enders.
