Cars burgled, windows busted on Broad Street
01/25/2015 2:37 PM by John M
Police tell us at least four cars were broken into in the 2900 block of East Broad Street. They say while some cars were unlocked, other vehicles had their windows smashed.
I don’t understand the “some cars were unlocked” bit. Does this mean the owners hadn’t locked them, or that the bad guys jimmied the locks? Also: Was anything stolen, or did the bad guys just get into the cars for unstated reasons?
Several RPD officers were taking reports 28/2900 blocks this AM around 10……..Also, my wife’s unlocked car (long story) was rummaged through on 31st.
K… I am sure what they mean is that they would check to see if the cars were unlocked first and if so, simply open the door and take what was inside. Those that weren’t has windows smashed. Apparently some people still leave cars unlocked?
I’ve had my window smashed while my car was unlocked (lock broken) before. It happens. Criminals are not generally very bright.
Could it be the same group caught on video back in December?

My husbands work truck also had its triangle window broken out over the weekend. Again nothing taken, just broken. This was on Leigh Street between 27th and 28th. Police were called. Just wanted everyone to be aware it isn’t just on Broad Street.
I am hoping these are isolated incidents and not a new wave of crime. When we first moved to Church Hill it was still the “hood” and had no less than 5 cars stolen in front of our house, 3 of which were ours. In the process the criminals were breaking into cars all around the block as I walked to see if I could spot the car in the neighborhood (an earlier car was left a couple of blocks away), I saw windows broken, doors opened and interiors ransacked with glove boxes open. I had hoped these bad elements had corrected themselves over the years.
BTW, the Richmond Police never fingerprinted the cars to try and hunt down the thieves while one of our cars ended up in Hanover and they did fingerprint it. The result was an arrest and the person got 30-years in prison! Of course we got no justice from the Richmond thefts.
We live in the 2900 block of East Broad and early Sunday morning (around two a.m.) I heard a lot of kids shouting outside. When I opened my front door they scattered. Fortunately my husband’s car is old and he doesn’t keep anything valuable in sight. I’d also like to know how many cars were unlocked by kids and not left unlocked by owners, because the latter is just basically putting a neon sign up saying PLEASE VANDALIZE ME.
