Richmond’s population continues to climb

01/30/2015 9:42 AM by

According to new population estimates released a few days ago by Weldon Cooper Center for Public Service Demographics Research Group at UVA, Richmond’s population has grown to 213,504, up 9,292 new residents since the official 2010 count of 204,214 (and up 15,714 from the 2000 count of 197,790).

The city’s population peaked at 249,621 in 1970 with the last annexation. The count dropped from there, though, into the mid-2000s. With steady growth since, the city’s population crossed back above 200,000 in 2008 and 210,000 in 2013.

From 2000-2010, the population of the East End dropped slightly (about 1,000 people). I haven’t seen any more recent data for this area.
