Work to start next week on Fairmount roundabout (UPDATE)
Construction is set to begin next week to redesign the intersection of 25th Street, Nine Mile Road and Fairmount Avenue, which will include the removal of existing traffic lights and installation of a roundabout.
This is the intersection where the Jim’s Local Market is rumored to be going, and had long been proposed for development.
The roundabout is a component of the East End Transformation Plan, which includes major sidewalk and landscaping improvements, modernization of public housing and revitalization of blighted residential areas.
The $1.2 million project has received state and federal funding.

Tons of information in Deanna’s link below. No more left turn from S Street, but you get to zip the circle instead. No fountain.

BONUS!
I’m actually really excited to see construction begin. Does anyone know if this roundabout will be anything similar to the fountain portrayed in the preposal of town square rendoring?
I’m stoked, too. Haven’t seen any images for this.
It’s finally happening!
I’m curious too how much it will reflect the original sketches. In order to make it work, it looked like they’d have to cut into the Laundromat parking. Just as long as they do it right, like at M and 25th; it better not be like the “traffic circle” at M and 30th, for example, that was so tightly placed that you can’t see past the building on the southeast corner without inching into the circle.
I’m curious on exactly how they will make this work with S street being offset from the center of the intersection so far. I do not recall a traffic accident/pedestrian struck there in many years. Wait times at a red light seem to be reasonable even at rush hour. Hope there is no impact on large vehicles negotiating the intersection as it is used many times a day by the fire station at 28th & S to go from S street to Fairmount Ave. And for a city that repeatedly cries hard times what is the cost? Yea yea I’m sure its some grant. Hope the same guy that designed the traffic obstruction at 31st and S has nothing to do with designing this round about. What a free for all that has turned into.
I am looking forward to this. If you come across any renderings please post them for us to see. Thanks!!!
Here is the link to the bid details and drawings. More technical than artistic but still cool. Click on “drawings” and it will open the PDF file. http://www.govcb.com/IFB-J-th-Street-and-ADP14050092230000225.htm
If I remember correctly, the East End Transformation plan was quite different from this. Not that this is bad – should be a vast improvement, regardless.
A) Does anyone have a link to those drawings or can anyone put together a comparison? B) Is this just a first step on the way to the other plan? C) How do/could the library/market/public square component (all of those, if I remember correctly, are part of the East End Transformation Plan) all fit together with THIS version of the circle?
Why do I have the funny feeling that Fire and Rescue will be called to this location quite often when it’s up and running?
Very cool drawings and very exciting. No fountain, just vegetation but still looks good.
This gives me some peace that it looks more like M & 25th than S & 31st. But it also cuts deeply into the proposed site for the grocery store. I imagine for that to work well, the one way section of 25th would have to go.
Any indication on proposed completion of the project?
Any idea how long this construction is supposed to last?
