Shoot out on 30th Street
From Lt.Sayles via The Church Hill Neighborhood Crime Watch:
Around noon today Saturday Feb. 21st there were several gunshots exchanged between two black males in the 500 block of N 30th St behind Chimborazo Elementary School. There was an argument, neither suspect was hit but a vehicle was.
One suspect was a resident and identified. He was armed with a undetermined brand of rifle, the weapon was seized by the police and he has been charged with firearms related offenses.
The other suspect fled in what is possible a burgundy Dodge Durango with possible front end damage. He was armed with a handgun.
He is described a black male probably in his 20’s, around 5′ 10″ to 11″ tall, med build, wearing a bomber hat with flaps, a baseball type jacket 2-toned gray sleeves and dark body, possible patch on front. He was also wearing shiny, silvery glasses.
If you see this suspect do not approach him, he is armed, BUT do call 911 immediately and state that this is possibly a suspect in a shootout. Give precise location and direction he is headed.
Police are searching for this suspect at this time and need our eyes and ears. You can also call the crime watch at [(804)648-2710] if for any reason you do not wish to contact police and all information will be relayed directly to the police at the First Precinct.
I heard a single gun shot at noon at 30th and broad.
And this (might) help to explain why only an innocent automobile was injured:

Seriously though, I’m thankful these idiots didn’t harm anyone. Their life expectancy is clearly contingent upon the skill of their next victim/opponent.
Wow! Good job RPD on such a quick arrest!
Witnessed this the other day. That ‘undetermined brand of rifle’ was a high-powered assault rifle…and he was SHOOTING DIRECTLY TOWARD THE SCHOOL in attempt to hit the other guy. School probably has holes. Only given “weapon related charges”…he should be in jail!!! Within 1000 feet of school too. What do you think should be done?
@luvzumba
So was he shooting on full auto or 3 round burst? Because to be an assult rifle it needs to have an auto option.
Or
Was it an assult “style” of weapon in semiauto
The reason im asking is because there is a BIG difference in charges auto vs. semiauto.
Can you describe what you observed a little more abuot this assult rifle?
I think SPH is right- your talking machine gun vs. “sporting rifle”?
@Zumba was he shooting on full auto?
A lot of people who aren’t familiar with guns get the two confused easily!
FYI:

The gun was shooting bullets either way right? Who cares what model it is.
@Alex.
Makes a huge difference. AUTO vs Semi Auto.
The effective range (danger) of a handgun is far less than a rifle such as a .308.
An example is that a rifle bullet could kill someone in the bottom, a handgun, maybe a block or so.
Big difference.
There is a big difference between a .22 pea shooter and a .308 rifle. There is also a big difference in shooting a AUTO rifle vs. a Semi auto sporting rifle. I think the main correction here was the politically correctness of saying “Assult Rifle”, inwhich many get confused. Just my 2 cents!
It looked very much like this: http://shadowbuster2010.deviantart.com/art/M14-EBR-Tan-289415386 No felony charges when firing toward the school?
I support gun ownership, but how about one of these flying through Chimborazoo Elementary School?

If I’m wrong about the assault rifle, Lt. Sayles can clarify…his officers took it away. Unfortunately, this resident behind the school very likely had another one within the hour. He wasn’t arrested.
If he was acting in defense, he might have just got cited for discharging a weapon in public. Lots of people around here having “sporting rifles” that “resemble” the one in your picture.
It’s actually not anymore more unlawful to discharge a rifle like that versus a revolver or it any semi auto handgun in the city.
All depends on the circumstances and It sounds like no one is really sure what happened besides the two guys shooting and the police.
Also he would get in trouble for shooting near a school, technically not at a school.
And I’m sure they won’t hit him with that considering the gun walk nuts this summer walked within a block of many schools and no one even stopped them
Btw john m, your title is bad ass. It’s almost like what I used to here in the news in the late 80s early 90s around here! Lol
I do not understand what you all are arguing about! Who cares what kind of gun it was or what it looked like or whether it was a machine gun or a hand gun. There was a shoot out on a public street right next to our elementary school which, thankfully, was not in session at the time. There’s no excuse for this behavior!
It sounds like the guy w/ rifle is claiming self-defense. I don’t buy that one bit. If anyone is mad at me and pulls a gun, I wouldn’t stand there and make him angrier. I’d get inside the house, hunker down, and wait for police (and keep my gun ready just in case). Instead he fired his high-powered rifle at a guy who looked like he really wanted to leave initially. And, continued to fire while he was running away. Isn’t there something to say about being shot in the back? There is more to this story I’m sure, and it’s likely NOT ANYTHING WE WANT IN OUR COMMUNITY.
@luvzumba
Your links are interesting. However, I’m reasonably certain this fine urban marksman was not using the rifle in your first link…it’s approx. $3,500:
http://www.fulton-armory.com/fultonarmoryusriflecal762mmm14-1-1-1-1-1-2.aspx
And the cartridges in your second link, don’t really make sense. Possible exception being a .30-06 round. As for the term “Assault Rifle”, it’s a widely held misnomer. If my car is black and scary looking, is it therefore an “Assault Car”?
@UnionHillian
A bad guy owning a $3500 gun?…please go back under your rock.
Call Lt. Sayles for clarification on the exact weapon/bullets, as was already suggested.
Well there’s a bullet hole in my house from this event. Wasn’t home that day to hear anything happen but one of those bullets came in one wall and is now stuck in another. Trajectory angles down, through a second bedroom, a full block away.
So it sounds like a “rifle”, just like the report stated. Thats why it hit a building a block away and went through a wall or two.
I do doubt he had a sniper rifle or “full auto” assult rifle like stated above.
