The agenda for the Tuesday, April 28, 2015 meeting of the Commission of Architectural Review includes a number of local projects:
- 2710 E. Franklin Street – Replace decking with AZEK grey decking
- 7 N. 29th Street – Construct a 2nd story porch and install new window
- 615 N. 25th Street – Enclose rear porch and construct two new outbuildings
- 2109-2111 M Street – Modify approved porch and window plans
- 310 N. 23rd Street – Paint house and replace porch columns
- 1902-1908 Princess Anne Avenue – Construct four attached single-family houses
- 2405 E. Clay Street – Construct new single-family house
- 425 N. 25th Street – Construct new mixed-use building

Sorry, but I wish Ridge Point would either stop building stuff in this area or start producing a halfway decent product. They have built two new construction houses within a block of my home, and both of them are awful caricatures of this neighborhood’s style of building. Any attempt at detailing in a cohesive manner falls flat on its face. This stuff can be done right, and the extra cost is minimal. Hire a decent architect, or “designer” even. I am continually sickened by the proliferation of this cheap crap which is able to pass HRC/CAR because it has some manner of resemblance to the houses around it.

If we as a community want to exhibit care in what we allow to happen with our built environment, we need to start following up, and not allow a single street-front elevation to determine the success or failure of a project.
Wow – Thomas I have to agree. Those pictures are ugly.
I mostly agree with you. But I actually like the second photo because it looks like such a cartoon. It’s not good architecture. But it’s cute and at least has some detail. Regardless, there are way too many things being built up here that use stock woodwoork without considering it’s scale or proportion to relative to the building, the lot size, or human perspective. Occasionally, the result is adorably stupid looking. Most of the time it just looks like crap.
The first thing I noticed for 2405 East Marshall Street was the out of scale cornice and roof line. Second was the haphazard arrangement of windows on the side elevation (or lack thereof). I’m a firm believer that windows, even on the side elevation of a house on a narrow lot should have some sort of order and form.
Hopefully CAR will get some letters from the community on this house that will direct them to provide some constructive feedback to the developer.
