Got new trees on your block? They need water!

From the Richmond Tree Stewards:
Young street trees need special care during their first summers in the hot urban environment if they are to survive and thrive .
They need YOUR help.
If there is a new street tree in front of your home, business or church, please haul out the hose and water that tree.
No watering bag on your street tree yet? There are other easy ways to get water deep down to the root ball without the watering bag.
Visit our Summer Tree Care page to find out how.
The soil is quite dry now and so the current recommendation for watering is once a week.

Question: can one get the city to plant a tree in one of the empty wells without paying for it up front?
Doubtfully.
The adopt-a-tree program is a good deal at $50 http://www.richmondgov.com/PublicWorks/documents/letterParticipAdoptATree.pdf
Now is the time that trees go on sale at various nurseries. I have bought sizeable trees for the park for under $50 from both LOWES and SOUTHERN STATES.
http://www.richmondgov.com/PublicWorks/UrbanForestry.aspx Is a good resource. Just make sure whatever you buy and plant is one of the approved species for tree wells. Otherwise it will grow too big and wind up with the ungainly pruning that Dominion Power likes to do
