New bakery opening in old GlobeHopper spot

Michael Thompson at Richmond BizSense has word on what’s next for the old GlobeHopper spot:
[Morgan Botwinick], formerly of the Jefferson Hotel, is launching Whisk bakery at 2100 E. Main St. She’ll look to open Sept. 1 in the 1,400-square-foot space that was last used by GlobeHopper, a coffeehouse that closed in February after a seven-year run.
Whisk will focus on French-style pastries with an American influence. Sweet and savory croissants, breakfast pastries, cookies and special-order cakes will be sold. Breakfast and lunch will also be served, along with beer and wine.
As Sugar Baking Company, Botwinick has been catering and selling at The Farmers Market at St. Stephen’s since 2012.

This is good news — I was sad to see that building just sitting there with nothing going on inside. It’s a great location. And while it does seem like we are super-loaded with bakeries, to me they are all so different that it just doesn’t matter. As long as what the new folks make is special and worth seeking out, they will do fine. It’s the mediocre places that suffer I think. Thankfully our East End bakeries are all good. I eat at them all — and what’s 10 lbs on a tall gal like me?:) Glad to see new business coming our way.
I am very alarmed and concerned about the waist lines of people on our block.

I eat at all the bakeries as well! I do not discriminate against carbs. 🙂
@Simon, I see your point on sustainability, but I think I would have more concern if this bakery (and the others) were depending on local foot traffic for the core of their customer base. This new business further solidifies the area as a bakery destination!

The first thing that I also think of when someone says another bakery is over saturation. Yet, I am still waiting to see any of them to produce a good yeast doughnut (Krispy Kreme style) hot and fresh instead of the stale stuff Farm Fresh sells. And what will become of that great face mural?
