Envision the future of Jefferson Avenue at public meetings this week
There will be two public meetings this week to introduce the next step of the Greening America’s Capitals project on Jefferson Avenue: Project Introduction on June 9 and Public Open House on June 11.
The public is invited to come help envision how Jefferson Avenue can “be an inviting street that is safer for pedestrians and bicyclists, be a vibrant street with thriving local businesses, better manage stormwater runoff with the addition of green, infrastructure. [and ] honor its history as a gateway to some of Richmond’s oldest neighborhoods.”

Who maintains this after it is built? The City? If so, color me skeptical. I am wearying of the City taking on new projects and building new infrastructure when it cannot maintain the infrastructure already in place–so many of blocks in Church Hill need major sidewalk and alley repairs. While I recognize the need to improve safety at this intersection, I would prefer the City do the simplest project possible that improves safety while requiring the least amount of care and attention in the future.
I’m looking forward to seeing this happen. It will make Jefferson Avenue safer for pedestrians and cyclists, and will be a tremendous upgrade on the expanse of blacktop across those intersections.
How is Alamo going to fair the interruption in traffic?
Looks to me like some con artists are selling an enormous solution to a tiny problem.
And where did the idea that Jefferson is so unsafe come from? I’m a half blind pedestrian who jaywalks across Jefferson at least a few times every day — and never once have I feared all those reputed racing cars I never see.
where is the monorail that was promised us?
Folks, keep in mind that the bulk of this project with the EPA is a grant to pay for the DESIGN of the corridor and NOT the construction. The EPA will provide lots of great technical design assistance, but the actual construction/implementation of the design will be the City’s responsibility. Some of the design concepts, such as the roundabout in front of Alamo, sound like they will indeed happen.
It should be noted that this is a community design forum intended to develop potential improvements for five key elements along Jefferson Ave. The issue of maintenance is certainly something to discuss and is the kind of input that is desired as part of this process.
The intent is to develop feasible concepts that can be developed into specific projects over time, and to create concepts that unify the street and plan for improvements rather than things happening on an ad hoc basis. Please come share thoughts with the design team so these concepts are developed with the community’s input.
The planners and EPA folks are sharing some really exciting ideas today. Lots of talk about bike lanes, safer cross walks, shade trees, storm water infrastructure and street level businesses. The same planners are listening to our thoughts and suggestions to make the plan even better. Please come tonight at 6:30pm and be part of the conversation. See the plans and add your ideas.
