Virginia Capital Trail completion scheduled for October
After years of anticipation, a counter on the Virginia Capital Trail site puts official completion of the 52 mile trail at 114 days out (October 1). When finished, the bicycle/pedestrian trail will “connect the Commonwealth’s past and present capitals of Jamestown and Richmond along the Scenic Route 5 corridor.”

While the section of trail west from Great Shiplock Park to the Canal Walk has been in use for some time, work on the rest of the Richmond section of the trail has been a relatively recent phenomena. The section of trail between Rocketts Landing and the river was paved this past month, though the blacktop ends just to the east. The rough outline of the trail has been cut through the woods to where the Varina section will come through.

There is still no connection between Great Shiplock Park and Intermediate Terminal. The lot slated for the Echo Harbour development is fenced of from the river to Dock Street. This section of the trail is to be privately financed and was earlier slated to be completed in 2014. The most recent newsletter from the Virginia Capital Trail Foundation says that Dock Street will have a temporary trail section in place by July.
The closest open section of the Virginia Capital Trail is the 7.3 miles of the Charles City Courthouse section, and the adjoining 13 miles of the Sherwood Forest section, the 4.8 miles of the Chickahominy Riverfront section, and the 2.4 miles of the Greensprings section at the trail’s eastern half.

As long as they get the dangerous traffic pinchpoint between Rockets and Osborne Turnpike completed quickly.
It does appear that the trail will cross route 5 at the intersection with Osborne Turnpike….this part was not well planned.
And for the most part, the trail doesnt appear to be much more than a paved lane following the road. I hope, in the future, trail designers will study popular trails like the MT Vernon one in NOVA and try to copy its feel.
@ Stephen, the first picture in this post shows the trail looking west. Before the construction began some people who fished from the Sugar Pad and in the Gillies Creek inlet used to park down this way. Since the construction started and from now on the only parking will be in the cobblestone Intermediate Terminal parking lot – there will be barriers to stop cars from going where they used to park. Also, I have been told by the construction supervisor that the section of the VA Cap Trail being done from the Henrico County line in Rocketts Landing through Intermediate Terminal and the Lehigh Cement property (in front of the towers) will be completed by the end of next week.

I drove down rt 5 into Charles City the other week without my camera… I will probably go and document what is there now.
I can’t wait to rent one of those “citibikes” from the future Jefferson Park rental stand then ride down this trail 🙂
I am hoping this aggressive goal is met. I have thoroughly enjoyed the 27 completed miles so far. There is a nice restaurant at Charles City Courthouse that makes for a relaxing meal after the 54 mile out and back ride.
