New principal named at MLK Middle School

Students and staff at MLK Middle School will start the coming school year with their 3rd principal in as many Septembers:

Richmond Public Schools (RPS) Superintendent Dr. Dana T. Bedden and Mr. Abe Jeffers, Executive Director of Secondary Education, are pleased to announce the selection of Derrick Scarborough to lead Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School as its new principal. Mr. Scarborough will assume his duties immediately in preparation for the upcoming school year. Dr. Howard Hopkins, a former RPS administrator who had been serving MLK Middle since the first of July as temporary administrator, will assist in the transition.

“We are pleased to welcome Mr. Scarborough to the city of Richmond and RPS. Mr. Scarborough possesses a long, dedicated track record of school leadership that will undoubtedly benefit all students at MLK Middle School,” Bedden said. “We are excited for Mr. Scarborough’s arrival and eager for him to start working with the community toward a strong start to the next school year.”

Mr. Scarborough has more than 30 years of experience in secondary education, with 23 years as a school administrator. For thirteen of the past fifteen school years, Scarborough has served as a middle school principal in various districts across the Commonwealth, including his most recent position as principal of Linkhorne Middle School in Lynchburg. He also has an extensive background in athletics, having spent a decade working as a football, basketball and softball coach.

“I want to thank Dr. Bedden and Mr. Jeffers for this tremendous opportunity,” said Scarborough. “I am excited to be a part of the Richmond Public School division and look forward to working with the MLK students, staff, parents and community partners.”

A Virginia native, Scarborough completed his undergraduate work at Liberty University in Lynchburg, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in health and physical education. He has also received a Master of Education degree in educational leadership from Lynchburg College.
