Help name the new restaurant in the East End Theater
The trio behind the restaurant coming to the East End Theater on 25th Street are attempting to crowdsource the name of the new place:
By going to www.nameusrva.com members of the community (and beyond) can submit their ideas and names for what Chip Zimmerman says they hope to be “Church Hill’s favorite new restaurant”. Amy Foxworthy adds; “we’ll select our favorite three options, post them on the site and then unveil the name at the restored theatre sign and marquee illumination some time in October”.
Deadline for submissions is noon October 1st with the unveiling ceremony date to be announced soon.
The person who submits the chosen restaurant name will receive $100 gift card to the establishment, a menu item named in their honor, and an invitation + three guests to the soft opening prior to the public grand opening event expected to be January 2016.
Who is the “trio”?
When the theater was originally opened in 1938, the building at 412 where several restaurants have been (last was Sarafran’s), opened at the same time as the movie house’s restaurant named “Hollywood Grill”. Why not name it after the original? Even if not a grill, can still use the name Hollywood.
And I did register my name selection so no cheating 🙂
Would love to see it with a 1930s Art Deco chrome and neon light décor.

@8 Imani… what is it you don’t like about this? The seeking of a name? The restaurant? The type of restaurant? The use of the space? Please elaborate.
Anyone know the type of food that might be served?

They have already mentioned the food will be similar to what is already being served ath The Mill. Here is their link with menus. At least they seem to have a wider variety to choose from than Dutch & Co.
Also, no matter what kind of food they serve, again, I am hoping that they stay true to the building architecture and timeframe of Art Deco for the interior of the restaurant.

@21 Crying LOL. I registered “Hillicious” but I won’t win because the first bad yelp review will call it Hellacious.
@21 Why would you say that? The menu has more choices than Dutch and a little closer to simpler fare. Personally, I am not into “trendy” foods especially in small, overpriced portions. And I don’t patronize a place just to be seen where hip people meet. I go for the food. I also prefer more down home fare and could care less about fat or gluten content… and dislike game meats.
Give me an old fashioned blue plate diner with traditional comfort foods. That is what we really need. 🙂

“The Hill Grill” would work. Barring that the could always call themselves “Another restaurant that got an ABC license unlike Buzzy’s” 🙂

I was wondering what happened with this “contest” but with ray… what??? The name is too similar to the Patrick Henry Inn and, sounds more like a Pub name than a restaurant. And besides what does it have to do with a Art Deco Movie Theater theme?
Also, I see all sort of permits issued but nothing happening and of course no inspections. The new marquee and sign was supposed to have gone up by the end of September or early October but again nothing yet. Josh, any updates?
When this project first delivered earlier in 2016 the “EAST END” portion of the sign lit up. Now I never see it lit up anymore. What’s the reason for the change? Is it broken? Landlord deemed electricity to light it too expensive? Cow towing to neighbors who didn’t like the sign?
I happened to love the lighted sign. And it seems historically accurate. So if critics are the sole reason the sign is never illuminated anymore I’d be disappointed.

They finally started lighting up the sign again earlier this week.
The sign is part of the character of this restored theater building so, it should always be lighted… at least at night. And believe that was the intent when it was replaced?
